Your worried that the 2nd hand hollenbecks could be faulty ?
There bullet proof, there will be no issue with either of them.
There designed for launching heavy F3B models in high winds, so they will launch your F3J models no worries.

To be honest your very lucky that there still for sale !

Best thing to do is drive to see them and test them out with a battery and have the best one.

Yes it's a decent price for a good winch but you also need to consider:

a turn around
safe battery clamps (unless your name is Sage!)
line rewinder
foot pedal
parachutes
lines
batteries

Which will add to the cost. I think with an ober kit you get the rewinder, the turnaround, the clamps, the foot pedal etc. I would think it would come with a foot pedal, but you better ask.  Make sure you get both drum expanders as well if you go for it.  The raw price of an ober winch is about £870 plus delivery (£950 ish?).

So you will save yourself a bit of cash and a 6month + wait, but it is not being given away certainly. But then nor should it be.

thinking about if you are flying f3j, I don't think you actually need as beefy a turn around as for f3b (less line).

Line length wouldn't have anything to do with the strength of the turnaround pulley I wouldn't have thought?

I think the Hollenbecks come with turnarounds - a friend of mine is buying one so there's only 1 left now.

But please don't consider getting a lesser turnaround pulley for F3j. A 3.8m spread tow carbon F3j model can put just as much strain on equipment as an f3b model, it's just that it will probably be on tow for less time.

I just assumed there would be that bit more stretch (pull) against the turn around with more line, but I'm sure you know more about it than me Neil.

I doubt that Jas will ever get it !

Last post on this for me - you would be foolish if you didnt get the hollenbeck.
You would always sell it for the same as you paid in 5 years time !

Sorry Tom, read my post again and it sounded a bit abrupt. I was just doing it in double quick time at work  :af

Thing is, it's easy to think F3j planes are less demanding on tow. But the way it's going, certainly at FAI International level, it's quite the opposite. F3b is all about generating line tension on tow to extract the highest launch possible from the airframe and the conditions. Time on tow is irrelevant. F3j is all about how much pre-tension you can get and then expending that energy in as short a time as possible for as high a launch as possible. Two very different approaches for what appears the same thing but both put enormous strain on equipment so a less beefy turnaround for F3j would be a false economy.

He has yes, just got  acourrier to collect it apparently.

He reckons he got a turnaround with his so the winch left won't come with one.

A good turnaround will cost around 150 - 180EUR new plus postage. Or have a look at Austins website Acemodel because I think he sells a Graupner turnaround a bit cheaper than that which looks perfectly fine. He'll be able to guide you 100%  :af

See how the turn around goes he will make me another if im not happy with it,the cable which you see they go all the way thought the bar then attach to the pulley it self,so should be ok.
