Chaps,

I'm putting together a budget Wild hare Extra 300 but I'm stuck on the motor.

I was going to use one of these from Hobbyking

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=14426

but like a lot of their motors its on backorder and I don't see them getting new motors in soon.

Any of the Giant cod equivalents are out of stock too.

Can anyone suggest similar motors on the budget end of the scale. I've got a Hacker in my Sbach which is nice but the Extra is supposed to be on a budget.  ;)

Giant Cod have their cheap brand 5345 in stock as well with a 170kV which I think would just work out with a 28% Extra. E-Power GC GT5345 170Kv 850g with a 24x12 prop or about that. should be around 4000 watts at max load. Assuming the AUW comes in about 16lbs that is 250 watts/lb. Perhaps a little less but that should be OK for unlimited vertical.

Cheers for the suggestions,

I will have a quick weigh up and see if it is anywhere near 16lbs. It has had some fairly beefy repairs in the past, but I'm not going to be extreme 3Ding it, but would like enough power to fly big aeros.

Phil, it's gonna be 16lbs easy, all that 1/4" ply up the front don't help....

I dunno...

Well Alan should know as the model used to belong to him.  I'm looking at 19 lbs before motor, esc, prop and spinner. Quick look at the giant cod website had me thinking this is going to be 21 lbs. That's only 190watts to the lb which isn't quite so good.

Any suggestions???

I should point out that Alan isn't responsible for the heavy repair, it was like that when he got it. It does suit my flying style though.

So this has just become available from Hobbyking. Looks good but why the high Ampage???? My Sbach only has a 100 amp controller and is fine ( forgot the actual current draw but  well within 100 Amps)

what do we think, is it overkill for this model????

I guess it would depend on how big your Sbach is. If it 10lbs for example and running 10-12 s cells it would probably only need 50-60 amps to fly very nicely indeed.

Well I got an emax 5345 from giant cod. Pretty cheap and I'm sure it will fly the extra and it cam be recycled into something else if it's not man enough. Just need to source a stand off mount that will give me an extra 85mm from the firewall to back of motor.

 Any suggestions??

Well standing on the bathroom scales, which I really hope reads high ;), she weighs in ready to fly at 19.7 pounds.
Just have a quick tweak to the wing incidences to do, they are about 1.5 degrees different which apparently equates to some pretty hefty right trim needed.

Looking like a good robust winter hack, just need to keep the speed up on landing. Ailerons are on different channels so would there be any benefit  in raising or lowering them slightly in the landing phase????

Well, she had her remaiden yesterday. Pretty blustery crosswind with the threat of rain, didn't made it not a very relaxing flight. After 4.5 minutes it started drizzling so a quick landing circuit and back into the car.

She flew well, the emax 5334 hauled her around the sky well, most of the flight at about half throttle. Tricky to work out the trimming too much but the wing incidence change seems to have worked. Lots of up trim needed so I need to check the motor installation.

Loops and rolls performed but not stall check which made the landing approach interesting and she pretty much dropped out of the sky from about 4 foot.

Need to work on that. :)

Forgot to say, about 1300 put back into each pack.

Glad it wenyt okay, get some more figures please and report back.

Supposed to be quite mild tomorrow but may prove quite difficult getting a flying field pass :xx

Currently 42 planes and 1 Helicopter! Perhaps I dont NEED them all but I want soooo many more !
