What a sod hey! 

I was only talking about this the other week to Tom & John, but it sounds like the old Friston airfield farm land is now in the process of being ploughed over.

I am guessing this must be the first time for it to be ploughed ever, & must have been used mainly for grazing. It was a massive "really" flat area, & you could even still see the 2 runways directions on the Google satellite maps.

there will be a F3F race on our slopes on the 11th of december as part of a southern F3F winter league come clinic.

 Eastbourne Sunday December 11th.

 

We will post more details closer to the time, the races are aimed at being fun with all welcome to race.  As theyr'e winter races they will be confirmed on the Friday evening before the races, depending on the weather.

 

John and I plan to have a race at Whitesheet and Eastbourne in the new year as well- We'll confirm those dates shortly.  Hope to see you all there.

Hi all,

I am going to try at the Long Man tomorrow, & will be there about 10.30-11.00.

If the wind is a bit too strong on the SW bowl, then I will most likely head on up to the Deep Dean/Tenantry Ground bowl up top. I struggle landing at the lower bowl, & find the wind blows the top off of the lift there at times. (I`m on 2.4 lol).

 

What a day, 

9 of us flew the Long Man SW bowl, & conditions were not to bad to start off with, but the wind certainly got up in the afternoon, & the lift reduced.

Only 5 slight mishaps to report, 4 of which due to wind lol.

1x PMP Hawk blown back over the fence but landed nicely just the other side.
1x Medium scale model had a wing joiner come loose, but easily fixed.
1x Radian blown backwards up the slope after landing nicely, which took the nose & fin off.
2x Wildy 60`s blown backwards up the slope after landing nicely, & over the top of resting flyers in the pits area.

Having said that, lots more in the way of great flights!

Me John and Tom went to some cliffs at Newhaven to try out a new site. OMG what an experience, launching with your toes over the cliff and the wind behind you
I have never flown a propper cliff before where the wind curls right round have hits you in the back
and landing was something else, rotors was an under statement
great fun though

Was the extra hour in bed not enough? where did you all get to today?

I arrived at the Long Man SW bowl at 10.00, & flew until 14.00 with 5 others. The wind was really strong, & the lift poor, but I was impressed watching the DSing behind the limited safety of a wire fence lol.

I witnessed the funniest thing ever involving a group of 4 urbanites! Ask me or Jim about this the next time you see us on the slopes!

I may even try tomorrow up there if there is a gap in the rain. I am getting conflicting forecasts at the moment, so I guess I will have to see what its like tomorrow.

I love that North facing slope & hope it is okay for Sunday too.

The club is running the frist of the southern f3f winter league this Sunday.
It was to be at  the Whitesheet  club site, but they have not got a slope for the current wind dirrection so we have moved it to our slopes.
we intend to run this at Cow gap or Witbread hollow down on the small cliffs so this should keep Butts lane free for sport flyers.

In case you had not noticed on the Alliaj thread
I have bought a new foam racer
and I wanted to give my old gulp to someone who would help keep 60" racing in Eastbourne alive
she is a little tatty will need two servos of any size and a RX other than that she flies so it's up to you if you want to strip her and make her pretty
let me know before Monday and I'll bring her to the AGM 

looking forward to the err... session... errmm ....AGM tonight, should be there around 8pm.
Still think that an amendment to the description of the XC comp result is necessary...I think it should read thus...
                     The comp was kicked off by Phil completing the entire course without fault, leaving me thinking I had made the cause to easy and everyone would end up joint first, this did not turn out to be the case, in fact... I had indeed completely underestimated Phil's judgment in model choice & flying skill...just staying up long enough to get round most of the course seemed to be almost impossible.

I have just received the winner's trophy for this year's aerobatic comp, thanks guys I do appreciate it. (I'm sorry that I could not make it to the AGM, too far to drive in not enough time  )

I guess many of you won`t be about on the slope tomorrow, so have a great Xmas, & hopefully see you out during the holiday.

I haven't been to the South Downs much lately, due to the lack of northerlies, but I've rejoined ESSA and I'm looking forward to some epic sessions in 2012.

Hi Gary, I think many of us locals want some Northerlies as well now. It seems the wind has been stuck around W-SW for ages now, & leaving us stuck with the bowl at the Long Man.

I think was 8 of us that flew the West flank today, & the lift was impressive until it got cold, & the wind then veered slightly Southerly & got a bit bumpy. Its like someone said earlier, its great when its square Westerly, but it gets a bit bumpy when the wind veers just a slight bit either side of West. It was a great 1st fly of the year though.

Mark, if you got some pictures of those Buzzards, then please do let me know.

It has had a fuselage repair which is strong but not very pretty hence price and slight crease to wing tip which is only cosmetic and minor which was done in transport. This is a very good model for sport flying as well as F3F. digi servos in wing.

Miraj Aeromod 2.5 m sport model this is a very good plane which is an excellent first step into bigger planes. It is very strong and can take some abuse. Comes ready to fly with all radio gear 35MHz. This model has had some repairs so don't expect perfection but still flys well.

Thorn 60in    Solid wood plane this is a heavy model for windy days comes with 2 hitec HS85 in wing only. Good condition.

Can anyone advise me what is the best wind direction for flying the northerly slope at Long Man?

I've actually never flown that slope and I've always thought it was good for north to northwest.  But looking at the map maybe the main area is north, with some NNW on one side and NNE on the other side?

I have flown there once Gary, and it is bowl shaped facing roughly North. So yes I'd expect it would work to a lesser extent in anything from NNW round to NNE.

I just drove through Ashdown Forest, what a lovely location for the Ashdown cross-country comp, looking forward to it.  I'm hopeless at cross-country but I'll enter anyway just for the fun of it.

and at least if we fly at the top the cars wont be far away

Is Whitbread Hollow the main bowl in front of the pub or the one closer to Eastbourne?  The first one faces SE, the second one faces E.  To be precise the first one is more ESE.  So for South or SSE wind those are not much use, but there are more southerly facing areas to the west of the pub (to the right as you look at the sea) so I guess you mean along there somewhere?
