Yep, a Speedo.
 :af

Red plane. White plane. Green plane. Blue plane. Yellow plane. Orange plane. I have lots of planes. I know that means you you admire me as I have more planes of greater value than you! I'm great.

Agreed, you're sure to love it. It'll stay up in gnats f@rt and go in a blow.  :af
I would suggest building the wing as a one piece affair and leaving the plane fully rigged if you can afford the space in your car/hangar. It's not much fun assembling it  on a cold and windy slope side and it doesn't take up much space.

Haha the needle 124 is next :)

That was way to easy, tail dead give away.

Here it is.

Anyone tried adding a rudder on this?

Fuse might be a but tight.

Might beef it up with some carbon.

Unless you intend to repeatedly use it as a tent peg It doesn't need strengthening and there is a large thread on RCGroups which does mention the fitting of a rudder.

Have a look for 'outlaw speedo' to see what others have done. A carbon sock over the whole fus is popular, so is a replacement sheeted foam wing.

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!
So that's where I've been going wrong...

Looks interesting. Thanks I'll check those that out.

Shes very sleek, wing very thin and has a nice rg15 I've heard.

Gonna be a tiny battery, servo. The accessory kit looks pretty poor.

What's the recommended servos for this, instructions are non existant with this one.

Can't grumble at 55 quid tho. Should be good on the local urine poor slope. :)

You'll need 3-off  9g servos and if you tickle the fuz under the canopy with a file or Dremel, a square AAA 4 cell pack will fit very snuggly.

Mine was very good, I wish it hadn't mid-aired an Alliaj and died.

I used the Vigor wing servos (only 8mm thick IIRC) and a 9g servo for the elevator. Various people have put rudders on them, JohnnyST for one.

I'd go for squeezing a 4AAA pack in, I went for the alula style 1/3 AA and it was always running out before I'd had enough fun!

Cracking plane to fly, pretty twitchy so you need to stay on your toes. But it will penetrate well in ridiculous winds, considering it weighs nothing.

It's small and has almost no frontal area, so it can also get tricky to see when flying straight away/towards you.

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!

Yep- you know me and rudders, just gotta have'em.

Put one on my Speedo soon as it arrived (couple of years back now) I did a thread somewhere either here or RCG. Here's a couple of pics:

Nice. Is it effective? For stall turns?

Does andys have a rudder as well?

Jim.

One other thing. How do the wing servos mount. Looks like just a balsa formed wing, do you need to knock up a servo mount and mount on ribs? There is one of these in box. Not sure what it's for. No instructions.

I glued mine to the servo covers - I think that's the usual thing.

Dribble some CA into the screw holes after doing them up once, to harden the balsa.

I put the Servos into the wing a dribbled a bit of 5 min Epoxy where it was close to the Balsa , I havent ever had a problem with it , and its quite easy to take them out again ,
I just wouldnt trust 4 screws into balsa to hold them in place ,

Servos i would suggest Giant cod and buying 3 of the E-max 8 g servos, Very cheap and Very good in my opinion . Much better than Tower Pro 9g's anyway or most other cheap servos  .
Battery i use a 350 mah Alula battery , and reciever a Corona synth 4 channel , cheap and small .

I used UHU Por to attach mine to the covers, and like you, dribbled thin Cyano into the screw holes. So far (over 2 years on) everything is still in place.  :xx

Mine had a harder life ;) so they popped off the covers now and again, but a touch of glue and they were straight back on.

Never had any problems with the cover->wing join though. Remember it weighs almost nothing.

One of our gang has one of these; and it's lovely to watch flying... I want one.. :)

Rimmer: Step up to Red Alert!
Kryten: Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb.

Yep I'd go along with the E-Max 8g servos. Don't think they were around when I built mine so used Hextronic 5gr servos which stood up pretty well.

I also stuck my servos to the servo covers- never had a problem.

Like all rudders Jim not only is it handy for stall turns but also snap rolls, spins, four point rolls etc.

I had a video on Vimeo for a while of the Speedo at "you know where" I could post it back on for a short while if you are interested.

IMO it's the best value for money plane ever- flies in 8mph up to 40+, with no ballast!

OK for what it's worth here's the vid: (best quality thro' Vimeo website)

Rog, please can you send me a pic of your rudder cable connection at the rudder end? Where does it exit? I think I'll give rudder a shot, I too am used to flying with rudders.

Does you know if andys speedo has a rudder?,  I've seen that fly at hunts hence the purchase! I think it will be perfect for my local slope with the terrible lift..

Did you epoxy the servos to the covers? Or tape with cross weave?

I hot glued mine, but it distorted the covers, so next time I'd use epoxy and microballoons.

Agreed, I think epoxy is a great way to install servos. Just not too good an epoxy(not west I use this fir repairs that require real strength). Use a cheap epoxy (poundland) and it will hold it fast until you give it some with a screwdriver, then it will crumble.

That  reminds me,  i dumped a Speedo into a load of bushes / trees on a very deserted site about 3 months ago but couldnt see it due to the leaf cover etc.   Will go back in a few weeks time when the leaves start to fall to see if i can recover any of the plane / kit etc. :'(

Hoping to be sloping

Jim, yes the vid is of the Speedo,it said so in the text and in the video headings! :''

No Andy's Speedo has no rudder.

I'd say it's not really worth the hassle unless you really want to give it a try- it's quite fiddly, Younhave been warned!

Anyway, here's a pic I took of the rudder workings.

Thanks. Is there are reason you raised the tailplane?

I thinking of bringing the linkage above the tailplane by cutting a slot in the fuse.

Remember, up is up, and down is down.  Except when inverted - when down is up, and up can be very expensive

Personally i ment These

but they arent Digital . and the ones in your link are the same except digital .

Perfectly aceptable for a speedo .

and faster than you would think .(the servos that is)

                     So is the plane  :co

Anyone tried adding a rudder on this?

Been posted before, but this is my variant on Cliffhanger's rudder mod, using a single pull-wire with a torsion springs on the rudder & ele : quite easy to setup, with the benefit of a removable h-stab for packablilty. (Rudder pull wire is routed above the h-stab to allow this - stab held in place with bent music-wire & diamond-tape)

Cheers, Geoff

Jimbo- Stick with the really good analogue e-power servos, The digi ones tend to burn out.

I've just gone and ordered a Speedo too - they look like great fun!

I want to get another once the yellow/black option is back in stock - I'm tempted to keep one built relatively "vanilla", then go all out on the other - carbon/kevlar sock, flaps, rudder - just muck around and see what can be done :D
