I want to keep a foamie in my hanger.

I've had a few namely :-

Wild thing(good bouncy but not much else)

M60 (ok but not my cuppa).

Wannabe - I liked this but wouldn't fly in anything under 15-20 mph

So what next? Any suggestions?

Something that I can fly to test the lift slope(will fly a circuit at least in nothing) but also fly when the conditions are to manic to fly 'more valuable' kit.

Thanks.

Bedlam if they were still made :(

I know you believe you understand what you think i said, but i am not sure you realise that what you think you heard is not what i meant.

How big do you want? A weasel might float your boat.

Where has all the BLOODY wind gone?

Hai, it looks remarkably like a bluto mk1. Build it light with a ballast box, should cover all the points you mentioned.

I like to fly with both feet on the ground.

I'm sure bluto is good. But not for me I don't think. Too big/cumbersome. I need this to pack small. Not too bothered about ballast either if it's windy I'll tape couple of strips of church roof to the underside.

What's weasel like? Performance Somewhere between WT and M60?

More like a smaller more acrobatic wildthing. Not really a racer.

I use mine for close in stuff, combat and checking the slope.

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!
So that's where I've been going wrong...

Take a look at the Gulp sr,48 or 60 http://www.stevedrake.com/] http://www.stevedrake.com/]http://www.stevedrake.com/]http://www.stevedrake.com/] http://www.stevedrake.com/

Gulp's a nice model, not sure if it'll fly in light conditions tho, might depend how light you build it. Downside is importing from the US. But if that's a route you fancy L.E.G. do some nice stuff.

http://www.leadingedgegliders.com/eppGliders/catalog.php

Builds are quite involved tho.

Ok, this isn't funny, who's moved my sense of humour?

Don't fancy importing.

Gulp was on the radar once. I Sent a email once to Steve drake, no response.. Hardly good cystomer service that.

Pity I like the SR. Anyone bought one from there before?

I would try emailing Steve again.

When I emailed him before buying he sent me a very long and helpful reply, nice bloke.  :af

He also agreed to mark the box with a small value so we didn't get hit with import tax.

btw is does kind of sound like you are after a foamie that has the light air capabilities of a dlg and the big air potential of a sled. With no ballast tube.  And that bounces.

Let me know if you find one.................

Get a 48inch Halfpipe from T9. Flat packs in the car with the fin out, fast and aerobatic in a good wind range and tough as old boots. Set it up right and you'll have loads of fun. :af

And me!!

The Weasel is good from about 7mph up to a lot more than you think, flown mine in 20mph+. Of course on a poor lift day 7mph might be a bit hit or miss, but there's a good overlap of the wind range which the Alula and Weasel will fly. The Alula doesn't mind a bit of a blow on the slope and again you might be surprised to find what it will fly in, probabaly around the 15mph mark for me. If you keep them as a 2 piece wing you can replace the wing joiner with steel or brass to 'ballast it up'. And on the Weasel there's a finger launch hole whick you can add some ballast to. That does move the CoG back tho as it's behind the balance point.

Halfpipe's nice, bit of a pain to build IMO, try and make it nose heavy tho, it's easier to add weight to the back once covered to get the CoG right than it is the front, where you'll end up cutting the covering to hide the piece of lead (or tape it on and hope you don't lose it  :-X)

Make your own....not hard an a lot cheaper, that way you can have it as you want it.

Hell yeah. Wild thing fits that doesn't it? Hmmm. Second thoughts.

I probably don't want a foamie. I just invested in a speedo, perhaps that will fill the lower wind speed range.

Then maybe I can supplement tje high speed range with something else. Perhaps the gulp SR.Nwhat about gulf ds? Like the shape of that.

Half pipe looks good but already two flying on the local pimple now, need to be different.

Got a weasel and flown it in 35mph. Bit of a struggle on a small hill though!

Not my favourite model, but the finger hole does allow a hard chuck (unlike most wings and planks). Good for testing lift with.

Today the pimple reminded me of rhossili. It was that good. Bring your boys toys out and fly.

some of the chaps at our site who have had enough of their Wildthings have bought Plutos http://www.epp-modelle.de/en/02_pluto.htm

I've had a quick twiddle on the sticks and they fly really well, feel bigger than 1.2m when in the air, hold their energy well and stay up in not a lot of blow

I`ve seen 1 or 2 Spectre`s on the seen. I think they are similar to the original wildy in shape, & a bit more snappy on loops & rolls.

http://flyingwings.co.uk/store/product_info.php?cPath=161&products_id=843

I had to laugh seeing a couple of experienced flyer friends flying one the other week between them!..Just before they passed the controls to eachother for the other to have a go, they would chuck it into a dive, & hand the controls over at the very last second.  ;D It reminded me of what I put a poor ESSA member through when he was showing me how to fly.

It was all a bit of safe fun, with no public around, & plenty of bushes to lesson the damage lol.

We occasionally have fun sessions like that here, I think some of the older pilots frown at it but, well, it's fun ;-)

Hit-the-stick, slope limbo, far-low chicken, all sorts. And when you crash when swooping too low over a pilot picking his plane up off the slope  :'', they are likely to helpfully relaunch you upside down and backwards, which can be a challenge to recover.

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!

Upside down easy, but backwards ? Will try that next time.
Sounds tricky..

No, but amusingly one bloke launched mine sideways and slowly, cackling wildly, then launched his own nice and fast and level. And turned off. Sadly for him
It was nicely trimmed so it was a fair drive to get it back again...

i did that once with the wild thing. She flew out straight the turned in a beautiful 180 degree arc, back towards the top of the slope and landed beautifully.

Back on topic...,

Anyway I spoke to Steve drake.

The srt 60 with 2 piece wing is 135$ Inc postage.

How does the performance compare with an m60?

Are they as critical on setting up?

similar level of performance IMHO - both good models.

I am not a plank expert compared to some but I would say that any high performance plank will be at least fairly critical for setup. If you take the reflex out, i.e. up elevator, you get the performance, but you also don't get the same stability. That's how I've always viewed it anyway.

The performance is of course heavily dependent on how it is i built.

Jimbo- IMHO, every hanger should have a Weasel (except Tom Satinet he doesn't rate them!).

Great  "in your face fun". As said, will fly in a wide wind speed range, good inverted. Good combat fun, knock a plastic bottle off a stick fun etc :D

but ironically I do actually have one...... the webs we weave.........

It is probably a good model to get as a lift indicator as it has reasonable light air performance, is very portable and can be given a hard chuck for at least one circuit.  That's pretty much what I use mine for.  While it can fly in pretty windy conditions it's not a big air model IMHO.

Cheap fun and a very nice kit.  The plastic belly pan is a poor though.

Tougher belly pans can be bought in black or white from EBay for a few quid. I can still crack them but I have to try harder ;)

Yes, but you shouldn't have to.  Flimsy plastic on the main impact area of an EPP model doesn't work that well.

I agree, I'd have built it so everything dropped in from the top instead, but hey ho. It's still a cracking foamie.

This might be something for you... (sorry for the translation, I was too lazy to do it myself  ::) )

It's ~ 25,- EUR incl shipping just for the foam. I've had a lot of fun with it from mild to wild and it took a lot of abuse the past year.  Sounds like what you are looking for. If you've got someone on hand who can cut foam cores it should be easy to copy. Use a PW106 airfoil and a geometry that fits your taste....

Here are some pics of my EPS build. The one in the video is EPP.
