Just read another thread about what EPP toy to have....Well this is what I'm up to.
The new toy is a development from my Consept, this was loosly based on the "Bluto -Oddesy"  theme, a triangular nose in front of the wing. Problem with planform (short nose moment arm) is that lots of lead has to be added to the nose to achieve the CoG

Not great photos, just took them in the garden with some flash
Just to show how the cost of a 60" toy like this compares with a comercially produced one
Foam for the main body approx £20
Carbon Golf club shafts for the spars £2:50 for the pair
Sheet of 4" balsa 1/4"  for the Elevons £3:50
Work it out yourself, Glue/Tape/Covering etc - you would still have to buy if you bought a kit
Oh about a 2 weeks work evenings (couple of hours each)
Will post other photos when finished to this stage

I know you believe you understand what you think i said, but i am not sure you realise that what you think you heard is not what i meant.

Forgot to mention
Epp for the Fuz is covered first with glass tape, then Lam film, then solar film.
Balsa Elevons an foam fin covered in light weight lam film (got this from Abbo) then solar film.
All to 60" Epp rules.

Amazing. Considering a bluto costs 169 quid. Great job.

Hii Yellowblue - nice job.
I built a similar planform wing out of ordinary white styrofoam (£4.50 a block from Wickes) and, as you stated, it needs a shedfull of lead up front. I tried to offset this with a "V" cutaway on the rear centreline but (dumb Clive) negated this with Twin fins (D'oh!).
Here is a video of it as well as, firstly, another conventional wing I built (Again Styrofoam).
Catch the classy landing ....

May i ask where you are getting your Carbon golf club shafts from at that price?  I'm on the lookout for some at the moment you see...

Nice looking foamy too :)

I can fix anything in the whole world, for I am armed with two rolls of Duct tape, and a rather large Hammer....

I like the concept (Consept!)

I must admit the idea of a foiled fuselage blended into a delta nosed wing is one I'd toyed with in the past. Good to see someone making it a reality. How much lead can you get in the nose / how much weight do you save by gettingt it there?

Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for the comments, not sure about amount of lead. I like to get it finished an leave the forward hole open, then play with the CoG. Using the Cog measurements of the Mako (same foil) and using similar nose length, I hope about 4-5 oz. hope to finish it this eve or tomorrow. When I know, I will post.

You can often find complete clubs at places like sports direct for a couple of quid each, even carbon ones.

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!
So that's where I've been going wrong...

Just had a look at the vid, nice one. They both seem to fly well, shame you didn't make them out of EPP.
I'm not keen on twin fins, they have disadvantages. The weight penalty, also more bits to be knocked off....This happened to Tuckers new Bluto last Saturday, we had a minor mid air (we both carried on flying) during a turn, it cracked one of the fins, on landing it fell off...not good
Talking of the Bluto fins, I don't think they are race legal....I didn't think Ply was allowed in fins...but then....

Well its finished or nearly, I still have to add the wipers, but it was getting late.
It came out at 2lb 3oz, I was pleased with that, its nice to be able to build in lightness.

For Steves info to get the CoG at 18% MAC I've used 2.45oz of lead. The Mako and the original Concept both flew with the Mac at 21%, but its safer to start with a tad nose heavy toy an then find the sweet spot.
couple of photos of the lead

It is surprising that the nose "extension" and the hoerner (sp?) type tips have completely masked the Blutoish shape. It now looks like some futuristic starship! - well, to my eyes it does.!  Best of luck on the maiden.

Why did I not make my models out of EPP? - cost!
I needed cheap "proof of concept" models before committing my twenty seven of her Majesty's British poundsworth off EPP block to the hotwire cutter. :) I can re-use the Rx Servos and battery when I refine the design enough to move over to EPP.

The Assegai (single fin) does fly well, but the unnamed twin fin needs work on it's diff - look at the video and it balloons on turning to port and dives on turning to starboard.
Positives on both are the stiffness that NS brings and the fact that the section chosen (PW51) works well.

Clive.

35oz is excellently light for that kind of planform Brian. Good Job!

2.5 oz in the nose is a pretty small amount compared to most (that I've built anyway :embarassed:).

Looks a real mean machine in the photos. Looking forward to a flight report.

Nothing wrong with routing the isobars where you want them to go Brian - especially on a wing.

Smart move!

Hi Clive

Some of us are now convinced that Flash Brian, as we have taken to calling him, is in fact part Klingon... ;D

I'll bring my camera on Saturday Brian, no problems.

I have something a bit similar on the blocks myself, tried to add a pic but failed again... >:(

Cheers
