What about Bertie Barnstormer and Gusset?

What about Blue Peter for all the sticky-back plastic that some early ARTF's were covered with.

Electrickery is the work of the devil,  proper aeroplanes are powered by engines.

Bob Weston, he who designed the great old Yamamotto, best trainer ever produced.

Not a patch on a ready II trainer!

Brian Taylor & Dave Platt paved the way for scale models, they were flying accurate scale warbirds at a time when the train of thought was a scaled down spitfire/hurricane.. would not fly.

Amongst other greats of the Scale World.
Mick Charles and Mick Reeves.

Another great in modelling is Walter Class of Germany, he was the man behind the Simprop RC brand, at one time the leading RC producer in Europe.

Beside producing the Simprop brand Walter was instrumental in persuading European manufacturers to adopt the twin stick two axis system which European flyers were reluctant to accept, preferring the cuddle box system with one stick and switches.

Walter also employed legendary wartime test pilot Hanna Reitsch as his personall pilot.

You will see other Class products harvesting the crops around you as stand in the field flying your planes.

Hi Jack, but you have to remember that the Ready was about 25 years later, mostly ready ( no pun intended !) to put together, so you learnt nothing about building, Bob's Yammy was all about building and flying the model you had built, it was ( is ) so good even the instructiions had two pages on how to teach yourself to fly !
It would be interesting to be able to find out just how many people were taught to fly on the Yammy since the '70's.
Regards as always
Chris.

P.S. forgot to add, does anyone remember Bunces model shop in Fareham Hants? Customer service at it's British best.
I remember buying a few engines there ( before internet was even thought about ) every engine i bought , i was given a free glow plug and prop !
They even took my old McGregor / JR radio in PX against a new Futaba Heli-set, How i wish we had shops like that now .
Chris.

remember it very well bought a lot of stuff in there during the late sixties and early seventies - bought and sold a few enginest through him - there was a little triangular cabinet outside in the angle between it and raffert newman (i think) really nice guy - was a member of Lee Bees the first club i belonged to = seem to recall he had a son as well he was into modelling as well. Here are a few I look up to (in no particular order):

George Aldridge - Designed many classic control line models - e.g. Peacemaker, Nobler
David Boddington - Enough said I think
Vic Smeed - Great Free flight, R/C and boat model designs over 80 years or so
Gig Eifflander - Gave us affordable engines for over 60 years (PAW) until the Chinese came along
Phil Smith - Designed many of the early great kits (I have a Tomtit hanging on the dining room wall right now)
John Oliver - Designer and maker of the legendary Oliver Tiger
Shigeo Ogawa - Founded OS whose designs are the basis of virtually every mainstream glow motor on sale today (even if many are high quality Chinese "clones")
Ron Moulton - CL pioneer and early radio flyer/designer
Neil Tidy - Brought us the finest 4 stroke motors whilst keeping them affordable and providing personal advice to all his customers.

In addition there are a lot of current flyers/builders/designers who will be on this list in a few years time .....

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Ali Machinchy Jr?

Surely one of the best show pilots going? I am sure that he must have inspired hundreds or thousands of youngsters to get involved with the hobby that may not have otherwise just from his show displays?

The standard of his show models is continually exceptional, I appreciate that his job allows him to do this but surely he should be on the list?

I built a Yamamoto in 1976, my first RC power model. Easy to fly, stable trainer. Rudder is too small as drawn on the plan and I was advised to double the width, which I did. Elevator snake / clevis solder joint broke on two occasions due to my (then) inept soldering skills. The model flew so well that I brought it in juggling the throttle to a safe landing on the runway, no problem. I learnt a lot from flying the Yamamoto. Thanks Bob.  :uk:

Agree with almost all of the above, additionally for amazing undying efforts over a very long time, on here as Essex BOF or, as we know him locally, Brian Austin.

Apart from many great model designs, he has helped many people into the sport (whether they wanted it or not).

He Silent Flight A Cert tested me, my Father and my Son, I hope he will be willing to test my Grandsons too one day!

Jef

Feel quite honoured to be included in this list.

I can claim to have started in the early 50's and to count Dave Platt, Mick Reeves amongst modelling club mates in the Wanstead Club as it was then. Nice to see some of my designs being re incarnated again under the PB Models banner.

This is worth alisten to Dave Platt on a Radio interview ignore C--- music at start

I see john haytree has died, bless him. I'd nominate harry brookes, jim davis, ali maschinsky snr, not because of their abilities but because they made retail a competitive place making it less expensive for us end users.
I'd also nominate Mick Wilshire for giving us something to talk about when all other topics have failed.
Sorry to here john haytree has died i never met him but spoke to him many times when i needed engine parts. He was really friendly chap sadly missed a  gent.

Just seen your post!

Yes, I remember Bunces!  I'd regularly make the trek there from Bishopfield boys school during lunchtimes - mostly to gawk in the window at all the shiny stuff that I couldn't afford!

Mind you, I did get most of my Mercury/Veron/Keil Kraft control-line kits there, not to mention my very first engine - a 1cc DC Spitfire diesel.

I was too young to join the Lee Bees, so my flying was confined to the public park at Stubbington.

Do the names Terry Mason, Michael Vear or Paul Haresign mean anything to anyone?

We all seem to have forgotten Ben Shereshaw- rc pioneer and inventor of the glow plug.
I thought that was Ray Arden?

The RC methanol glowplug is probably a combination of the two....

Not forgetting some clever chemist that found out that hot platinum wire could be used to catalyse the the oxition of methanol to methanal (formaldehyde) creating lots of heat in the process!

Once that was discovered it was an easy task for engineers to think of coiling it up and sticking it into an engine  :ev
