Car was loaded ready for a days flying, went inside to make sarnies for  lunch, came back out to the car with flight bag....it was raining...sod it.
So into the workshop:-
Next on the list is a refurb of my Telos.... some of you might remember the build thread, an then the big fire an the Telos was salvaged.
I had put it away an intended to clean it up, repaint it an fly it again. I got it out a couple of weeks ago and horrors the heat had started to delaminate the wing skins (1/64 ply over 200gm carbon)....not worth cleaning. The decision was made new flying serfaces were needed, off to see the Timinator, he cut me a nice new set of cores. Today I started on it, wings are now bagged with PU glue using 1/64 ply, not going to use carbon this time, going to try an keep it light,
Some photos of the fire damage

I will take some photos of the bagged wings tomorrow, Rocket Ronnie came around today an watched/helped with the bagging, I think he was impressed how quick they can be done using PU glue.
I think such a futuristic fuz needs some special tips on the wings...watch iths space

Hi Brian,

I don’t know how you manage to find the enthusiasm for all this building, but keep it up.

After talking with you & rocket the other week I realised it must be eight years since I skinned a wing, long overdue for the next one so got some new templates made.

Just put it in the bag, my first time with PU, will have to see what it looks like later tonight.

This is just a test so made with white builders foam and some very old obeche  veneer, all a bit crappy.  Where do you get your 1/64” ply. I need some long sheets for the proper wing.

Hi Dave, building is better than watching Carp on the TV, also I get cheap toys that way  :af
1/64 ply came from model shop in Wakfield, next to Morrisons. Only sizes they have are 1'x4' £20 a sheet. Tuckers has just got some epoxy board/sheet same thickness, a lot cheaper an I think you can get it bigger than 4'. Might be the way to go.
Keep up the good work an enthusiasm

Well it rained again today, got to the slope late morning, Ronnie an I had a fly for about 10 mins, then it started, we sat in the shed until 2pm, then got soaked walking to the car.
Ended up in the workshop :-
Cut out the servo bays, then laminated some wing tips 1/4 balsa outsides, with a filling of 200gm carbon an 1/32 ply. These are now a basic shape ready for fitting

Rain again today...so into the shop...faced up the servo bays with 1/64 ply, stuck the tips on. Cut myself some hardwood leading edges an stuck them on...waiting for the epoxy to dry...next a lot of sanding.

Rain again today....so....
Got my little plane out and attacked the tips an leading edges, a quick sand down after that- sorted an looking good.
Used a hot wire on the foam for the servo leads
Then made up a small compression block for the wing retaining bolt, cut out a couple of holes to fit an joined the wings together.
Whilst waiting for that epoxy to dry, removed all the old paint off the Fuz, using Ldil best thiners.
Added wing joining tape with laminating epoxy...needs 24 hrs to go off. Might have a bit of a rest from it tomorrow, think SHMBO has some jobs lined up for me  :banghead:

Not much done this eve, Club night. I did manage to glue in the front wing retaining dowles before I went. Next to glass the wings.

I've been a tad slow on this for the last couple of days SHMBO has had me working  :'(.
I have added some filler between the new wing and the Fuz to get a good fit (different foil) I've sanded it down now ready to glassed the wings.
There will be another delay to this project as a flap horn on my Vector came adrift today (hangar rash)   :banghead:even though the wings were in the bags. So that will need to be fixed next

Finished the SHMBO project today (roof on one of the outbuildings) so managed to glass the bottom of the wings, need to speed this project up.

Wings glassed, Ailerons cut out an faced with 1/64 ply, wing cut out also faced.
Whilst waiting for the wings to dry I started to make the mechanism for the all moving canard.
Next make up the servo mounts in the wing servo bays, should be able to make a start on that tomorrow.

Started on the canard...boxed in some 4mm sq tube in balsa for joiner tube, marked up the foam cores an cut to fit joiner tubes. Cut an shaped some 1/32 end ply plates, then glued up with epoxy
some photos
Dry fit to test, then drying an taped to bench

Things have been getting done. Canard halves and fairings have been finished and glassed, drying at the mo.
There was a need to move the canards so I came up with an idea...square drive shafts, with square joiners (sq carbon tube with a steel rod insert through it)
I have installed sq brass tube in the canard halves (4mm inside) and made up an actuating jig out of epoxy board and some bearings, lots of playing about to get it right.
I needed a control arm to move the tube, so I made one out of an old hinge.
Some photos of the actuating jig

Photos of the canards an fairings. The fairings are not load bearing, just there so that the canards have a flat surface to work against. Since the photos I have sprayed them with primer filler

:af Brian that is truly inspirational.
I wish I could do things manually as well as that.
I would love to see this fly in person. it is an odd looking model, and I don't think pictures do it justice.
Is the canard Strong? ie would you fly it anywhere or only where you know you have unobstructed landings like un-tufted grass.

congrats on another good build, and thank you for sharing it on this quite form.

Thanks for the complement. Its nice to know that others are interested.
Yep the canards are strong, when I used to fly it before the fire I used to fly at most of the local slopes, never had a prob.
The beauty of the canard is that you can slow it down so much for landing, it doesn't stall that easily.
The down side is that its near impossible to loop it.
I drew up a paint job design for the wing and Fuz this evening, but I have run out of mask film. Will get some tomorrow, then throw some more paint at it

That's a terrific looking machine Brian. It looks good just standing still. Having now seen your other designs fly, I'm really looking forward to being around when that one gets chucked off Tinkers. .. :af ..

Thanks, silicone hinges on the ailerons turned out ok. I'm going to cut the masks for the top colour this evening, an spray tomorrow. Then its only to fit aileron servos, rx, battery an some church roof to ballance.
Should make its maiden on the weekend  :af

Just back in from the workshop....Drew an cut masks, took less time than I thought. I sprayed the canards an started to spray the wings, then rattle can ran out, not a prob thought I....until after giving the can a good shaking, started on the spray....Different colour a light orange came out instead of the day-glo orange  :banghead:...lots of shaking an still the same colour  :banghead: :banghead:....back to Halfords tomorrow for a replacement can. All I hope is that the film mask wont start to lift. :xx

Some photos... the Day-glo doesn't come out very well in the photos, but will give you an idea of the design. Second photo is the part sprayed 2 colour wing  :banghead:

Hey Brian
What day glow orange are you using?
Never seen any at our local small Halfords. the reference would be good.
I don't like orange, but find it very practical on a model.

Went an got a new can today, mask didn't lift so did the spray job.....But when the paint was dry an I lifted off the film,it left most of the sticky stuff on the wing...I have spent most of the evening cleaning it off, what a pain
I have sprayed it all over with clear lacquer, just need to outline the orange with a permanent marker, to improve its definition. Hope you all like the paint job
couple of photos of where I'm at...

Looks great ,best of luck  :af
Thanks.
Had a little play with it in the workshop today, because I wasn't happy with the canards....There was some slop. I decided against using the carbon joiner and opted for a square brass one, less flex. I then soldered a piano wire rod inside the brass tube to give it some strength, there was still some slop, I cured this with some cyno...sorted.
Adding this extra weight in the front resulted in decreasing the lead required to obtain the CoG to 10gms.
Build in lightness thats what I say.
A photo taken outside today trying to show the Orange in its true Day-Glo colour....camera refused. Must read the manual

Big prob, today its light rain and mist, so no flying.  :'(
