XM 607
« on: November 10, 2011, 12:59:44 PM »
Does anyone have any photos of the above plane?

It is still "alive" at RAF Waddington, but I am especially after any pictures whilst it was based on Ascension Island during the Falklands.  The plane was painted prior to the first mission with several changes, and I want to try get them right.

Thanks in advance

Andy

607 is parked opposite the spotters area on the a15 and is easily accessable to photograh. I beleive she still wears the same markings she had for the black buck missions

I have read the book- this is actually my main source for the colour scheme at the time- there is a number of descriptions of changes.  Unfortunately the photos in the colour plates section are pretty small.

If I remember correctly the photos I have seen of the plane at Waddington have unit markings on- the book is very specific that these were painted over prior to the missions.  If possible I would also like to see the borrowed ECM unit in position, as I am thinking about adding it to my model.  Unfortunately Waddington is too fat away for me to be able to justify visiting, although should I ever be passing I will stop off

The book is a great read though, for anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.  How things didn't fall to pieces at any one of a hundred opportunities I don't know.

Vulcan 607. Best book I have read, on the edge of my seat all the way through (and I knew how it ended!) Truly amazing stuff, coming back over the South Atlantic and hoping to find the tanker, knowing there is no rescue if you miss it, or cant refuel for any of the loads of reasons it could all go wrong..... Real heroes.

607 is indeed at Waddington, but my understanding is that it far from  'alive' and is in pretty poor shape suffering from being outside and neglected.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong if anyone knows otherwise. It seems a pity that this historic airframe has not been preserved in better shape.

And now read 'Sea Harrier Over The Falklands' by Sharkey Ward

Sharkey Ward commanded 801 Naval Air Squadron, his outspoken version of events including the operation by Vulcan 607 is an excellent read..

Fokker- that has cleared up just about all my questions- many thanks.

It appears that it is indeed in "Black Buck" paint still- the pictures with the unit badges on are all pre-Falklands, and the dark grey underside is clear to see.

For those that enjoyed the book, he has written others in a similar vein.
