Anyone use a video head cam? I'm thinking of making one. I have a quite big hd cam with a standard tripod mount. Anyone got any pics of theirs to give me a few ideas? Thx.

A friend of mine put together this contraption using the cardboard box technique. Works quite well, but we tend to try and find isolated places to use it  :)

Looks like you and scott have the same ideas, when it comes to head cams. I think i can do a bit better even if drainpipe is used.

I have made a bunch of vids using the low cost head cam shown below. Does a nice job, but I will upgrade to a HD version when I can divert some modelling funds :)

Found these on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Motorcycles-Cam-Camera-Action-sport-Helmet-Video-Camcorder-DV-/180749824793?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a15877319
Tons of others too, you may know which are better, or someone else might, but look like a good cheap option instead of a box on your head.  HD versions available but a bit more £££

Ok, this isn't funny, who's moved my sense of humour?

Cycle/skateboard helmet route I think. The work hat option is just a bit too strange to be wearing on a hill side.

Got myself a snowboard helmet, now I need to make a bracket to sit on the side or top and a sighter that sticks out front.
Helmet should also give me some protection while I learn to DS :)

I need to figure out how to use the drainpipe for Scott in the build.

This is gonna be a sort of make it up as I go along type of build.
Anyway I made up a right angle bracket to hold the cam and the mount out of ply. I'm going to make up the mount and attachment and then glass it to complete.
Will try to keep the helmet untouched/undamaged if I can do So that i can use for skiing too :)

Coming along now. I need some way of attaching the lower ear pads to the bottom of the mount. G clamps work, but they would look rather silly. Could go with another strap around the bottom.
Will glass the whole thing once ply mount is complete.

Jimbo- why don't you just buy my nice compact Xacti camera ( now reduced to £90 incl postage!) and attach neatly to the side of your helmet. I'll even include the ali. mounting bracket and (small ) counter balance weight ;) :af

(When videoing on the slope, the  screen gets flipped down flat.)

Rog,

I'm creating a helmet cam along the lines of yours.
I've got a platform (screwfix direct builders hat) that I've attached a camera bolt to (on top).
[ filed down the rib on top to make a flat platform - epoxied one of those cheap bike-cam strap on screws onto the middle.]
I am as I speak, epoxying two vertical carbon bars down from the brim - similar to those in your picture - my question is really about the use of the "sight-er" when filming...

Being so close yo your eyes the sight-er is blurry to say the least - with one eye closed the sight-er becomes more apparent in vision - although naturally alternating eyes places the object at different positions within the frame - do you close one eye when sighting in order to see the oblong sighting frame more clearly ?  $%&

Just wondering if you're related to Clarence the cross-eyed Lion - I've a feeling I'm gunna be when Ive used this a few times -

Chris

I found it a bit of problem putting the hat on in exactly tje same place each time, ie cam angle.

Some sort of ground alignment is needed each time by a fellow flier.

Funny you should mention that......

Although the rectangular sighting frame looks squished, when I look through all I see is a blurry frame about the same size as the video frame.
It's not supposed to be a clear outline, it's just there to keep the model in shot

As Jimbo just mentioned the PITA is playing around with the camera x and y coordinates, so when you put on the helmet you know (hope!) that the sighting frame is lined up with the camera video picture.

Can't really see a solution to that. Considering you may be flying on your own most of the time, it's still a lottery even with the most fancy sighting device. You won't know whether the helmets on straight until you look at it. Unless a fellow can align your sight with the frame before you fly.

How did you know what size to make the sight? It will vary depending in what distance you fly at, so again there is a knack to flying the plane at the correct distance.

Its more about the object of your focus ,
not about size of frame . you want the plane in the centre .
and if you have a frame set up like Rogers , then why would you need to get help ?
if he has the helmet on his head and its straight onto his face the camera will still be in the frames shot . thats why its there  :banghead:

                 hahahaah

                                Bob

p.s hardest bit is moving your head , when usually you use your eyes  :af

Yep Bob is right,The frame is just there to help you centre the shot, and unless the model is very close, ie a couple of feet away, it works really well.

How do you know if your helmet is on straight- it's called a pocket mirror, £1.00 in Wilko! ;D

(this ends my scriptures on head cams!)
