Tonight it's the wings
I am still not sure weather to try to keep the servo cut outs

There are no servo covers for the wings so
a) buy some clear ones from T9
b) cut them out using the thinnest blade I can to reduce the amount lost and try to refit after
as is a foam wing I was thinking I would carbon the foam sides ion the servo holes, to look nice and add strength
then I could add a small strip of balsa to make a lip for the cut out cover to sit on, giving me a flush finish
??

no heat shrink on the wiring loom?

If you cut out the "covers" you could create a lip with a bit of ply under the wing skin for them to sit on.

doesn't look very 2.4ghz friendly!

There is no heat shrink on the loom because I plan to use hot melt glue and use the glue to fix them to the spar tube at the same time.

No it's not 2.4 friendly
but having a canopy rather than a nose cone means "whiskers" will be easy to install and as it will be my F3F plane I hope not to be specking out much anyway (though I have no worries on whisker range of a M-link)

They are only forecasting it gusting between 27-37mph at moment. ;D

Anyone got any tips to working with carbon cloth
I have lined my servo cut outs in the wings with carbon cloth

It was awful cloth just unwinds all the time
I did think about sticking the cloth on marsking tape, painting with epoxy and leaving on till dry?

someone must have some clever tips

too late for this job but there will be another time  :af

Be careful about what your cyano does to the foam though!

Another method.

Get some plastic sheet. Wax one side a couple of times. Pop your cloth on it, and wet it out with a roller or whatever. You can really put some pressure on it and flatten the tows out nicely. Once done, use scissors to cut the carbon/ plastic sheet to the exact size/ shape you want whilst still wet. Put it in place, ideally leaving it with a little pressure on it to keep it there. Once cured, the plastic sheet will release off nicely leaving you with a perfectly flat shiny carbon surface.

Sandwich the cloth and minimal epoxy between layers of poly bag.
Spread the epoxy with a wallpaper seam roller, pressing the epoxy into the cloth weave for efficient impregnation.
Cut out the required shape with an Olfa Material Cutter, working to a previously prepared paper template.
Peel off the top layer of poly.
Apply the pregged cloth in place, rolling/pressing on the remaining poly.
Peel off the remaining poly, dab excess epoxy away with kitchen roll to make surface as dry as possible.
Press on peel ply (Dacron), if a key is required for future adhesion.  Leave in place until cured.
Remove peel ply and it's done.  Neat, clean and light.  Easy - even for an idiot like me.

Spray it with '77 spray to hold the weave together, and treat as normal.

Loom now set in position I use hot melt glue instead of heat shrink as I thing it's better for this job, it hold everything in place as well as insulates it

I have made up the wing servo trays so the servo arm face down (towards the top skin of the wing)

I have used Epoxy board to make the control horns (not finished yet but you get the idea)

OMG wing servos make easy NOT!!!

What a nightmare not sure I can even get 3150s to fit with the internal push rod set up
your meant to put the servo in upside down (the arm facing down not up) to get the diagonal action on the push rod, so the control horn is on the under side rather than the top, but to get enough servo arm and clearance means the whole servo sits a few mil out from the wing  :banghead:
a 3150 is only 10.8mil thick which in only 0.8mil thicker than thin wing servos
So I plan to either:
1) make up the smallest servo arm possible and  :xx for enough movement
2) make up a glass servo cover that allows for the servo to patrude a few mil

Hey Allen

If that's a bottom hinged surface with that little black thing being the horn underneath the surface, then I can't see how that will work, other than with an absolutely giga amount of potential for slop and inaccuracy, as the horn looks spectacularly short. If I was you I would just do a conventional top driven solution with a cross over linkage. It's not hard to make an appropriate channel through the foam with a nicely warmed piece of relatively large gauge piano wire  :af

Hi Allen,

I really appreciate your kind offer, but think you should give it to someone a little more deserving!  :af

I do love the flying wings, but it drives me mad`er all the taping involved, & I remember the trouble I had attemting to strip my old Wildy. Also, I feel I am more cut out to the sedate soaring type of flying, as opposed to the lightning quick reactions you F3F`ers have.

Is that HP48 what JP` has?...If so,  they look like they sure motor!  :)

I need some to have it that I know will dso there best to make it to the 1 or 2 60" we have and you seem to always make the effort to be at every event

Maiden today at the Longman in a 30-40mph  lol not the most suitable but  ::)

OMG if anyone want to know what it was like and has once owned and loved a Prodij, well that is EXACTLY what it was like, was extremely responsive

I set her up as the book
launched at 75% dual rate, she was all over the place WAY TO MUCH movement,
second flight was 60% dual rates and two sluggs of lead, much better just a little to much down elevator and I may remove the snaps on the down movement ?

Vid is still up loading
