It's my birthday, so I'm finally allowed to play with my Sunbird!

Sadly now I've got to go to work and leave it alone  :(

Carbon fibre mmmm

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!
So that's where I've been going wrong...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOYO!!!
Seeing as how we fly together and you've now got a Sunbird, it's my birthday in a couple of weeks so i'll be asking for one of these . . . .

and then for Christmas, this lot . . .

But I'm just going to nip out and get myself one of these immediately . . .

Happy birthday mate
 :ev ;)

p.s. I'm envious as hell - nice one bud.

Red plane. White plane. Green plane. Blue plane. Yellow plane. Orange plane. I have lots of planes. I know that means you you admire me as I have more planes of greater value than you! I'm great.

I'll be putting halfway decent servos in this one, do they'll be my Christmas present ;)

3150s are too many £££s, I've been looking at the MKS DS460 but can't see many actual user experiences with them as regards slop, ruggedness etc.

What??? in a sunbird...you will need covers the size of the long mynd to cover an hs85...good servo though.I use the 5085 digi on my elevator and rudder of the Luna 2...super powerfull and accurate...Chris.T

PS  wouldn't have thought it would fit between the skins even..

It is a pretty skinny wing. I've seen a few people using the Vigor wing servos which I had in my speedo and they seemed fine. But it feels like my first brand new mouldie should have something 'better'.

I'll be trying an HS125MG in it tonight, possibly with the tabs cut off and possibly only on the flaps where the wing is a touch deeper.

I have 5125s in my nyx furio. Goes well. Try and get the metal/Alu mounts they are good if budget allows.
That sunbird looks nice on that colour scheme. 207 bucks. I'm tempted, not going to buy an f3f as a second but at 200 bucks delivered its worth a punt.

Yeah..thought it was skinny ..on the subject of servos.....I have used the vigor's in a micro floh...there are ok but get very sloppy very soon and are not very accurate. My 2p worth....on my Luna ,like you my first "new" mouldie I was all set on hyperion 095 in the wing..was going to treat it as I thought it would be worth it on the first new one. Then I got sidetracked...and bought and installed some savox 0255 and thought i have saved a fortune ....Big mistake.

Now I am not going to savox bash...I have got over that now but i do think they are ok for £16...but are not accurate enough for a good mouldie.I still get 0.7mm each way over run on the trailing edge when waggling. Its not my linkage or setup as I have just finished my vector 3 with s3150 all round  and what a difference. No overrun at all...perfect.But yes..£34 in stead of £16.

Anyway back to my point...don't skimp...you will regret it.Go with you feelings and treat it will respect.I wish I had put the hyperions in the Luna now..Anyway..hope this helps your decision...If you put vigor's in you will be replacing them within 6 months.I have had 6 xS3150 in a 2.3m hotliner for over 5yrs now and they are still going strong...Chris.T

PS..I have hitec 5085 on rudder and elevator on the luna and they have and still are fine..But too big for the sunbird.. :'(

Happy Birthday Paul.

Looks nice with a white canopy  :af

How about the Atlas DS09AMD as an alternative servo to the MKS? Only £1 dearer with impressive specs, 9mm thick, otherwise about the size of a HS65.

Servo..... http://robotbirds.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=85_71_184&products_id=3050

You wouldn't really need 1 of those on the rudder IMO, you could use something cheaper there.

Sounds good, any real word experience out there with them?

I'm anti-Savox as well, having had a couple of 255s for a while - nasty buzzy whiny things.

I was thinking HS65s for rudder and elevator - but metal gear or Karbonite(?).

It's weird, the Sunbird feels much smaller than the FFish did, even though it's the same span. And something about the extreme rigidness of the carbon wings makes them seem lighter than they actually are.

They look too small really, a 4.1g servo with only 0.86kgcm of torque.

That Atlas DS09AMD does look good though - 2kgcm and completely programmable (travel and speed) via a USB adaptor.

Yeah I think the white canopy looks good, gives it a nose cone look. Your plane though, do as you want....

IMO, HS65HB on the rudder, not much point spending lots on that servo, it's plenty strong enough and I haven't had a rudder servo strip (yet).

65Mg is what I use on the ele, but there is a bit of play in the gears. If you can get something with less slop then it'd be better, but the HS 'works'. I tried HB's on the ele but they strip if you slap it down a bit too heavy, I guess the AMT puts too much force down the pushrod on to the gears.

Try a search on RCGroups (or maybe start a thread/post) re: the Atlas servo's. I've read posts where guys have used them and rate them, but you'll have to do the leg work yourself there, soz m8..... $%&.

I'm sure Zim mentioned them at some point, I think he said he stocked them when he was Mr SR, so maybe Tony or Zim can advise?

AMD's are 4kg, it's the GMD which is 2kg.

Yeah...I put hyperion 09 in the micro floh after i had  enought of the vigors....very good servo..strong and accurate.
Also I have used hitec hs 5065 on many a good model...they are on my flaps of a 2.4m jantar scale glider...good servos...

I would stick to digi servos for a mouldie with thin trailing edges..they help to keep everything centred(except savox 255 :banghead:)..they all have higher holding torque in any given position. The new mks 6100 are supposed to be vgood  but are too new to comment really as i have only seen them on t9 site so far.If they are as good as their 450/460 etc they will be a winner.

Only problem I found is the price creep ...hyperion 09 and mks 6100 are only £9 less than a s3150...you pays your money...etc...

Flew mine yesterday BTW, CoG was at 80mm unballasted, 79mm ballasted. Only flew it ballasted and it was pretty neutral in the dive. I need to try the unballasted CoG and then if it's good at 80mm so I can then reduce the size of a slug to put ballasted back by 1mm so they're the same.

I'm waiting for some DS09scd's to drop through the letterbox...after much deliberating about which wingservos were thin enough to go into my Sunbird I settled on these...at approx £24.00 each...Rather than go for metal gears, I thought I'd try the nylon ones...

you don't have to use the same servo or even brand on the flaps and ailerons.
metal gear better on the flaps and thinness more desirable on the ailerons.

hyperion ds09amds are good servos, but not cheap.

£9 each - so £36 per plane.. the extra adds up really quickly!

It's interesting looking at the ds09 datasheets - the ds09amd has 4kg torque on a 4 cell pack, the ds09gmd only has 1.6kg but is three times as fast, 0.06s instead of 0.18s. I'm never sure how much you need speed in this application though - it seems like the airflow needs time to reflow anyway otherwise you are just stirring up turbulence.

I'm leaning towards the ds09amd's for the wings and HS65 metal ele,  HS65 plastic rudder. The digital equivalent HS5065 seems to have a bad reputation online, or was that teething trouble? I have 5085MGs in the Acacia and they have stood up well, even to me.

I tried an HS125MG in the wing earlier on. No chance at all without cutting all three tabs off, and even then it wouldn't fit without levering the wing skin up and/or sanding the corner off the servo. I'm not ready to do that yet... They are 10mm thick and 30x34mm though, and the hole in the wing is only 35mm square.

The ds09amd's are 9mmx23x23 (near as damnit) which should be a much easier fit.

Tom, the wing bays are both only 9mm deep, so I need thin servos for both anyway. And it may as well be metal geared really, I think stronger is better than ultra-low-slop just now.

What is there that's that thin, and good, between the ds09 and the Vigor?

Metal gears on flaps is a def, you'll strip them the 1st time you forget/aren't quick enough to get them up otherwise.

If you've got the raised servo covers that come with the kit, then 65's fit in the aileron bays no prob. I thought the flap bays were a little deeper, but not by much.

Money no object I'd go with AMD's on the flaps and ele, SCD's ailerons and rudder. Cheaper option could be Ripmax SD150's on ailerons and rudder  http://www.servoshop.co.uk/index.php?pid=RMXSD150&area=Servo, found them to be a good little servo on my Bird 60's ailerons. Or 65's.....(which I haven't had a problem with on the Bird 60's V-tail)

Servo bays are tight, I don't think you'd get 3150's in there either, you're looking at a HS65 size servo for the wings.

Ok, this isn't funny, who's moved my sense of humour?

Yoyo, it's all very well getting a larger servo like the HS125's in there, but if you do opt for a bigger than HS size, remember, you MIGHT need to get it out at some point. Which leads me to your install...it might seem best to push the servo back towards the spar, under the skin. If you do, they are a real bugger to get out if needed. It seems easier as you can go clevis to clevis on the rod,  but I'd advise only using 1 clevis and a 90 degree bend in some quality threaded bar so you can put the servo more in the middle of the bay...just in case.

The AMDs are metal so I can see why you'd want them on the flaps. I guess the SCDs being plastic have less strength but less slop, and are also a bit quicker.

The plastic ones are a couple of pounds cheaper, does that figure in your list too? I'm trying to decide whether to go all metal or an AMD/SCD mix.

Where do people buy the DS09s from? I can only really see aerobuddies in the UK, or the Hyperion shop. Lots of people sell the ds095, not so many the ds09.
