You'll love it!

I have the VXL and although it flies nicely I was initially a bit disappointed with it.

But then I ballasted it up a bit and it really came alive  :af

I think the extra weight of the VXE is well worth it.

Best of luck with the build...

does yours have 3 ballast tubes per wing root? I was expecting 4 - the front is a LONG way in front of the CG.

Yes 3 ballast tubes in each wing  :af i'll sort out that out once i get it flying, i'll get some steel rods cut soon or stainless steel tube filled with lead.

recommended CG is 85 to start.
on the german forum they are talking 90 to 93mm.

There is quite a lot of info on this thread:
http://www.rc-network.de/forum/showthread.php/125404-PACE-VX
obviously in german - but stuff like cg and throws you can make out - or use google translate

crow - as normal - loads of down flap, bit of up aileron and a bit of down elevator.
I think there are settings on the lesky website for the pace vx.

Hi Guys
Some setting up details from Dave wright after his initial flight with the Pace:

The c o g is about 85 mm, I would suggest no further back for the 1st flight, elavater 10 mm both ways only slight up flap,is needed ,but it wont go up much anyway, mixed with ailerons,my ailorons was about 15 mm up with 50% differential dialed in.
the ewd, will be crow brake, I had has much has i could get with out stressing anything ,about 10mm up aileron for brakes, you will need some down elavater with the brakes mine did loops when i put the brakes on, with no compensation, a bit of a guess but i would suggest 20% compensation, i didnt get chance to tune mine in. when i flew it the snap was about 3 mm , but i will definatley increase it..

I only flew the model for about 10 minutes then gave it to Pengy to take to wales, so i didnt get chance to play about with the settings, but the model is very very stable , very easy to fly,  dont have the cog far back and you wont have any problems, flys has a good model should,

By next weekend hopefully i will have more setting details, but these are good start point, she flys very well, you wont be disapointed, the only other suggestion i have is to put the control rod for the elavater on the out side hole, mine is on the first one(inside) and i think the elavater is a bit slow, no doubt reverse expo may sort it out, or and the stinger aerial i had on will be coming off and a conventional aerial will be put on the outside of the fuz, a couple of glitches.

Well I am nearing the end of this build but I have hit a problem.
It was always in the forefront of my mind about the ballast tubes being so far in the front of the Cg, but having done some basic calculations I have come to the conclusion that it is actually impossible to use ballast and balance this model.....

if I use lead filled steel tubes, I would need to put a 250g+ lead weight in the nose of the model. Assuming a 2/3a battery fixed in place. that is a 250g weight aft of the battery, because it would have to be removable for when you put the ballast in. (not that you can fit that much weight in)

The front ballast tubes, assuming a CG of 91mm is 67mm in front of the CG and the middle ones are 55mm in front of the CG!  :o I think you would actually need tail weight to balance the model with no nose weight in at all.  I think that 250g weight would actually mean the model was nose heavy.

I can't help feeling rather than just doing away with the rear ballast tube it might have made more sense to move the incidence pin back a bit.   If the goal is to make installing a wiring connector a bit easier. Although that is a bit of a joke as there is not much easy about installing the gear in this model!  Okay it is not that hard, but it is all manual anyway. installing the wing connector behind the rear tube would not be harder than many of the other build steps.

I guess I could change to steel bars, but that would give you 900g of ballast which is hopeless for a hardcore frontside or medium DS model.  even the 1200g you can achieve with lead is not enough ballast for really big conditions.

So you are left with a model that either doesn't have ballast or can only either be flown fully ballasted (probably with tail weight).... great............  :banghead:

Even if you use the Lesky produced, optional, steel ballast you would still need nearly 200g aft of the battery to make the model balance in an ballasted state (depending on CG).

Tom, has the ballast provision changed then at some stage?  I thought that the E had 4 tubes in each wing giving 8 rods of chosen material total.  The attached pic is still current on the Lesky web site.

I wonder why the tube has been dumped?  Do you think it was structurally (or constructionally) advantageous?  I guess it would have made your conundrum more manageable had the foremost been dumped rather the rearmost - but better still keeping the 4, if either option was possible.

Could it just be that the tube is actually there but didn't get opened up after moulding?

Can you ask the manufacturers?

I am pretty sure the tube is not there

If you have 400 g of ballast 67mm in front of the cg + 400g of ballast 55mm in front of the CG and the 400g about 2mm behind the CG you are running in to balancing problems.

The CG is about in the middle of the tube nearest the green connector.

That looks like more than halfway back on the MAC - is it really supposed to be all the way back there, that seems unusual (to my inexperienced eye at least)?

What about adding lead to the tail when you pop the front ballasts in? Less lead to use and you won't lose the nose weight? Not sure if you could create a specific tail lead provision and have it addable and removable in 1/4s for use with each rod?

Are there any tubes inside the tail feathers you could extend and use? it shouldn't take much all the way back there..

Crikey, it looks a long way back to me too - but of these things, on such exotica, I have zero experience.

Hmm.  Looking closely at the web site pic with 4 tubes per wing panel, it does look a very tight situation to accommodate a greenie.

Hi Tom

My VXL has only 2 ballast tubes in the wings.

I too was expecting one each side of the CG, but no - both mine are at the le positions shown in your pic.

I did wonder if all 4 are installed and the wrong ones opened up, but fortunately for me mine was built by Tony Fu with a custom fuz ballast tube so I have not felt the need to investigate further....

Best of luck with them guys

Cheers

If you buy one of these look at fuse ballast. Otherwise it's a heavy model with small ballast capacity.

That looks like more than halfway back on the MAC - is it really supposed to be all the way back there, that seems unusual (to my inexperienced eye at least)?

Hey Yoyo

MAC stands for Mean Aerodynamic Chord. You're referring to the root chord. In a planform with leading edge sweep and no forward sweep on the trailing edge (i.e. a swept chordline) the CG sitting at say 30% MAC may well represent as 50% plus at the root chord.

What about adding lead to the tail when you pop the front ballasts in? Less lead to use and you won't lose the nose weight? Not sure if you could create a specific tail lead provision and have it addable and removable in 1/4s for use with each rod?
Just thinking out loud  $%&

I think i will resort to a removable nose weight to counter the middle tube. That is what the tray aft of the battery is for (plus adds strength). And then use a tack on tail weight for the front tube. Although even that would require a 35g weight 750 mm from the cg to counter the weight in the front tube. 35g is quite a bit of lead when you cut it off a sheet.

The words p&ss and poor spring to mind......

Thanks Tim, I was thinking of the VXH/VXL too with the single tubes.

Shocking. Maybe it was a structural weakness if they removed it or simply a QA bodge job (more likely the former imo). Either way it's poor.
