Started on my bummers bullet this weekend, I won't go into to much detail as it's going to be very similar to the tazer build stakinshevens is doing. I'm lucky enough (unlucky?) to work in a machine shop so made a nice light engine mount last week, I also laminated the firewall with carbon cloth for a bit of bling ;). I used the same method as in the tazer build to mound the f1 but I used 1hr epoxy and micro fibres to produce a nice strong fillet around the firewall. This one is fitted with an Irvine 46 and I plan on glassing the wing and tail.

If it's anything like that yellow Mustang fun fighter you've got then you're bloody right!

Finished trimming the cowl tonight, not sure on how to hold the cowl on yet? Think i have seen pics of other bummer bullets with a centre bolt holding it on, anyone have any ideas? A bit premature but i have knocked up a set of wheels and used 4mm carbon for undercarriage legs.

We used a centre bolt as you say, between the back of the head and the cooling outlet slot you've cut.

Otherwise, you could just tape it on - sounds crude (and is) but that's what a lot of people do. Gives easy access if you need to take the cowl off and also stops the oil seeping in under the edges.

Looking good mate.

Not sure when I will get to work on this next as I'm moving house week after next and the work shops all packed up, so here's a little update. Built the tail plane up from 2 sheets of 3/16 balsa and a centre sheet of 1/64 ply, I also cut the slots out for the hinges beforehand. Sanded to shape and ready to glass, once glassed I will cut the elevators out with a sharp knife then prime and paint. I have glued the wing tips on and fitted radio active micro servo covers. Alan brown has a nice touch when it comes to the servo hatch, he pre cuts the foam and covers the area with brown parcel tape before the balsa veneer goes on. So all u do is cut the balsa skin where marked and the foam block just falls out ;) I'm trying to build in live hinges, I have dug a 3mm slot out on the bottom if the wing along the hinge line and then cut through the top hinge line. Its hard to see in the pic but I have lightly sanded around the hinge line and ironed on a strip of solatext that when glassed and painted should make a nice hinge that won't crack?

Got the tail glued in place and set up a 5mm carbon push rod with some aluminium ends I turned for 3mm clevis.

I see you show a JR DS8711 servo connected to the elevator. Is that slightly overkill - 25 kgcm torque?

The 8711 is only for mock up, will be more like a 4-6kg servo going in for real ;)

I'm pushing to get this ready for the first meeting on the 8th next month. Fuz is 90% finished, capped the fin off and rudder is ready for a coat of 2k lacquer. After glassing I like to mix some resin with micro balloons and give a light skim all over to fill the weave. Will give the wing a light sand and prime next.

Looks like a nice finish!
Did you get to fly it yesterday? Have you weighed it yet?.... curious to see how a glass/painted model compares to a film covered model.

Yep got 5 flights on it yesterday. It screwed out a bit on tight turns and after a phone call to mr bardoe he prescribed some led on the wing tip so apart from that it flew great. Not weighed it yet but as you say it would be interesting to see if there's any difference. See you guys at the weekend.

Chris, you gonna be flying yours this weekend or staying with the Q500 low winger ?

Bit of both I think Dave... thinking of doing the first 3 with the Q500, then second set of heats with the Tazer. It'd be good to fly the Q500 trimmed out now and try to better my times, but I also want to compare like-for-like SP46 models as well.
