Orange Rx and a DSMX satellite -- Warning…!
« on: April 06, 2011, 12:10:50 PM »
Just a quick “heads up” re DSMX satellite receivers.

I have just tried to add a Spektrum satellite Rx to a cheapy Orange Rx.
I have done this in the past (with DSM2 satellites) and have had absolutely NO problems with them.

However, this time the satellite was a DSMX jobbie.  On the website which I got it from, it says it is also compatible with DSM2, BUT BEWARE --- it is not --- and it has now ruined the (new) Orange Rx.  It now refuses to bind.

So it’s a bin job for the Orange Rx.  :'(
The satellite is being sent back.  ::)

I wouldn't think this is a DSM2/X thing Brian - merely an electrical one. These receievers only claim to be compatible with the DSM2 signal prortocol. This is the digital format of the radio signal, nothing more. They make no claims about being electrically interchangable with other manufacturers' products, so it would never have occurred to me to assume that the satalite receivers for each brand were interchangable unless they had explicitly said they were. It's rather like expecting to be able to use the same distributor on a Ford engine and a Vauxhall engine. They do similar jobs and probably have similar specifications, but they aren'rt interchangable units.

Indeed, but I have used Spektrum DSM2 satellites before (with the cheapy Orange receivers) without any problems.  It is only when I used a DSMX satellite that the problems occurred.

Such is life.

Think it proves that if you go the cheap route, you should stay on that route.

How exactly has/could it ruin your cheapy Rx?

This paragraph says it all i think.

Always purchase products from a Horizon Hobby, Inc. authorized dealer to ensure authentic high-quality Spektrum product. Horizon Hobby, Inc. disclaims all support and warranty with regards, but not limited to, compatibility and performance of counterfeit products or products claiming compatibility with DSM2, DSMX or Spektrum.

But maybe the warning here is not to try a DSMX satellite with any DSM2 Rx maybe the satellites are are unique to each type of Rx. Who's going to test it on a proper Spektrum Rx to check it out  :D

That's no more than a manufacturers statement that they will not support third party products (& why should they?). It's a standard statement from any OE manufacturer who (of course) has a vested interest in being the sole supplier of goods to you. It proves absolutely nothing about product quality, but merely makes an implication that couldn't possibly be proven.

Yes, the DSMX remote receivers only work on DSMX Receivers, not DSM2.

The OP said it had ruined his Orange Receiver, so this statement says that Spektrum cannot be blamed for that, it was his own fault, if indeed it did ruin hie Orange Receiver.  Still would like to know how?

Yup, I accept full responsibility for wrecking my (non Spektrum) Orange Rx by plugging it into a (Spektrum) DSMX satellite.  It was only a fiver, so it isn't exactly a huge loss.
The main point is that the Orange receivers will work with (Spektrum) DSM2 satellites, and the Website said the DSMX satellite was compatible with DSM2 receivers -- which it wasn't in this case.

How did it ruin it?  Simple --- I just plugged it (DSMX) into the Orange Rx and tried to bind it.
The Orange Rx can now not be bound --- the light just keeps flashing rapidly.
The rest, as they say, is history.

Sorry to trawl up this old thread, but i just got into 2.4G  :embarassed:

The Orange won't bind with a DSMX satellite (makes sense). It will seem to to be broken after you try it though (yes I tried!). What you then have is an Orange RX that flashes it's LED very slowly and weakly at you.

To reset it, remove the satellite, power it up and fit the bind plug whilst powered. Powerdown. Choose a fresh model or reset the one you have to factory default. Turn off tx. When you powerup the rx you should be presented with a fast-flashing rx and then bind as normal.

It took me several took several tries until the rx would bind again. Putting the bind key in after powering up seems to do something as does not using the original model in the tx. Powering up with the bind plug in did not seem to sort it. Binding with a model selection that is not factory reset also wouldn't bind.

This is with DX8 on latest firmware that defaults to 22mS.
