I'm not knocking Robins work I think it's fantastic  :af  It's just there looks to little meat left on the bit with the holes to me that's all.

Aren't the pieces with slots in affect spars?  if so there has been a lot of strength removed I'm just wondering if that's wise?
hi Shaun,
i guest you would try to keep me on my toes, nice try ;D.
the rudder post and the fin post are 12mm balsa ,you can cut 12mm balsa with the laser but you get a bit of
a taper so i cut it in 6mm , and cut 2 out and glue them together ,the slots are only in one piece,
so not much strength is lost :af.
you will see in the pic's.
so Shaun and Alan i hope you can see i do think about the build :study:.

hi Kev,
yes it is , i did not buy the laser to make money with it, it is that i build so many planes and it makes cutting
them out simple.
when i first go it i did not have a clue how use it ,the guy set it up and gave a quick demo on how it works
and that was it .
with in six months i had mastered it , i have had the laser 18 month's now and i Ame still finding new ways
to do things on it , the hard part is drawing the parts out ,as i do not know much about autocad (dxf ).
i do cut bits out for friends.

happy to help out any time,

Thank you, most kind.   I must pick your brains on the cutter head sometime as I have the wherewithal already for the X/Y leadcrews and steppersso it wouldn't be too tricky to build one of my own.

I wanted to build my own laser cutter a few years back but when I saw what else was needed, I gave up! The steppers and controller board are the easy bit, it's the water cooler, CO2 laser spares etc that threw me out! I guess it's just easier for me to pop over to Robin's and use his at the moment as he's only 10 mins drive away!
Can't wait to get the hurricane up though, I know my P61 is large but the Hurricane is huge - and lighter!

I had to Google it.    The meaning I've chosen to interpret it as is "Fixed That For You".   As I like not just the fin, I'm not sure it was a fix! ;D

Oh lord, sorry I won't be at all amusing if explained:

Pup cam wrote " a thing of beauty"
which I quoted using a pun(ish) to replace "thing" with "fin" (since we were looking at the rather lovely balsawork on your hurricane fin)

Wrote "FTFY" (ie "fixed that for you") after it to point out the change.

I bet you're sorry now, too ;)

As for the plane, I'd be tempted to just varnish the wood and put a clear covering on it - make it a 'Ghost Hurricane'.

Excellent work Robin,
I agree with Alan it really does look a thing of beauty.
It does seem a shame to cover all of that lovely wood working up.

Maybe it could be done like a car show cutaway model - one side fully scale and detailed, the other side (and wing) transparent and showing all the interior goodness?

That would be a fantastic sight.

I too have only just spotted this - fantastic build.
Looking at the that beautiful stick and former rear fuselage I do wonder how many people realise that structurally the Hurricane was not actually made like that.

In essence it was a substantial steel tube space frame with a light weight structure on the outside simply for streamlining.
Not meant as any sort of criticism just an observation.
Can't wait to see it complete.

  • Anything as long as its scale.
I have just removed the last post which could be seen as slanderous, was certainly unnecessary and nothing at all to do with the subject matter.

Could we keep such thoughts, weather fact or not to ourselves and concentrate on the building of a Hurricane please.

Sorry guys, I was just trying to show the difference of what you see isn't always what you get :-)
I didn't consider it slanderous at the time as it was front page of the Daily Southern Echo :-)

Yep it does have a tubular structure inside but once covered you cant see it.

Have a look at these restoration pictures - fascinating stuff. I had not realised the stringers and formers were mainly there to provide a smooth aerodynamic shape.

Nice link  :af............what an aircraft!!

Indeed.

Another very useful source of info on the inner workings of the Hurricane is this book

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hawker-Hurricane-Inside-Melvyn-Hiscock/dp/1861266308/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339145252&sr=8-1

Very good book that debunks the theory that, compared to the Spitfire, the Hurricane was a "simple aircraft".  It wasn't, it just used technology  and methods which had become "traditional"  as opposed to the new ways of the now ubiquitous aluminium monocoque.    For example the main spar is fabricated from numerous telescopic octagonal (IIRC) steel sections and a sheet web.

Keep up the goodwork Robin :af
