Bad Raven

Just been watching a live stream from Lanzarote Airport.

Arrival from the South
Take off from the North
Take off from the South (Immediate)
Take off from the South.

Wind looked cross, but not square, looked a decent breeze.

Not noticed that closeness of reversal before.

The mountains pose a barrier. A British Midland pilot I know once took off in a 40 knot tail wind as he did not fancy the mountains. I gather this is about the limit.

The one that took off "downwind" was a shuttle to Las Palmas so it was poss more about time saving, taking off in the right direction.

When British Airways were undertaking their A380 training at Manston for a couple of weeks, I visited the airport to view the aircraft's final departure.

So, as the wind was blowing from the east quite strongly and as the aircraft left the apron, I started to drive to the western end of the runway to watch the engine run up and take off. However as soon as it joined the runway the captain opened the throttles fully and took off downwind!!  :o

Obviously it had a very light load, but it was quite unexpected!
I'm not old, I've just been young for a very long time!

I imagine they have to test in all scenarios, because weather is a malign mistress and doesn't always want to co-operate.

Scored by how many houses have tyre marks on their roof?

Flying close to Biggin Hill (legally on NOTAM and ATC approval) its evident that the two seat spitfire still operates with a fair crosswind component.

Having a largish model Beech Staggerwing, I researched and found that the full size are now limited to 10 knots crosswind component.

This year so far I have done 8 commercial flights, and all have taken off near to or into wind, even though in one case I'm pretty sure we taxi'd half the total miles to get to the right runway (obviously laden, but in the case of one flight minus one of our suitcases!)
