Meltdown

In case anyone hasn't heard, the Cotwolds Slopers have mostly migrated to the BARCS forum. 

There is a very good reason for this, which we won't go into here.

Hey Slopeflyer,

If you upgrade the firmware on any 8FG (you may already have) then latest firmwares make it a 14 channel radio. You then have the option of large wing types including the '2 aileron, 4 flap' wing. With that set everything else is straight forward. It basically give you two pairs of flaps - the main flaps and then camber flaps. Note these are just names and the naming has nothing to do with camber though. When you set camber you give the radio individual settings for each aileron and flap surface.

You could also go 4 aileron and 2 flap but it makes no difference after you turn on aileron to flap mixing.

I'm starting to like it too. It eats up the sky, lands fast though, I've added a but more down flap in crow now, hopefully it'll slow down a bit more now. Coupled the ail/flaps now for rolling, hopefully it'll be snappier now.
How much does your 5m thermic weigh? Very nice model that. Is it a 3 piece wing?

Hi Slopeflyer, 

The XXXL is about 6.0kg which from a raw wing loading perspective is quite high at about 55g/dm2. When you consider scale etc its actually OK. 5ms fly reasonably fast (eats up the sky is so true) so you could experiment with a little flap on landing and see how you go.

I really struggled with roll before I coupled the flaps to the ailerons. Its still not that quick to roll though and needs some speed to throw it around. The high aspect means good rudder control is also needed but looking at your videos of big models I'm sure your on that!

It is a 3 piece wing. The thing you cannot really tell from the video is how much of a curve there is across the wing from tip to tip

Well look what I found on Frocester this afternoon!!



It been in thick bracken for 4 months now and believe it or not no damage and the battery, FrSky receiver, battery and servos work perfectly!!

Exellent news! It's amazing what turns up when things start dying back.

I'd cycle the batteries a few times over several days before trusting a plane to them though!

Had a good sesh with Sparkyben and his father at Malvern today in 30mph+ winds, with the odd snow flurry thrown in for good measure. As luck would have it Ben filmed the last flight of the day - me flying my Aeromacchi MB339. It speaks for itself.

Great fun day and some beautiful lift to boot. If only I could have mastered the landing!!

I went flying at Crickley park today (on leckhampton ridge) in a N/NE which seemed to work. Did a little tour of the local slopes Selsley, Rodbrgh and Frocester.
Has anyone flown of Selsley in a SW? I checked it out and it looks like it might work. Looks like NW is straight on, but what about N too? Might also work.

Selsley doesn't work on a SW as the air flow is disrupted by the ridge just in front and to the left of the slope. Northerlys are a bone of contention with some suggesting its 'doable' whilst others, myself included, think the lift falls away as its too far off slope. Personally I feel if the winds are from the North, Cam Long Down is a better option as the air flow is bang on slope and the lift is usually very smooth.
