Aeronca Champion revamp
« on: July 11, 2010, 15:22:29 PM »
popped down and picked up the aeronca from the Stig today
going to get a revamp also looking at the plans found out it is in a way coming home as precedent used to be based in abbey wood se2 London that's where i used to live
the model itself is in very good nick considering how long its been in the loft to give you an idea a servo was still fitted in the wing which was a skyleader ic servo old type connector
once home i gave it a quick t-cut it is cleaning up very well for its age
some new parts to be fitted over the weeks it is possible it will go petrol and will still be used as it was made as a tug
once done it will be going back to the club it used to fly at for its first flight
pictures as i go and also advice may be needed
anyone that wants to build one can borrow the plans to copy
Ron

added just to remind you how it stands at the moment from the stigs picture

I remember buying one of those from Woodvale about 30 years ago Ron. Absolute bargain it was at 40 for the kit.

it is certainly a well built model its a pity that many strayed over to ARTF  models over the last 10 years as some of the kits that precedent made are very good this one is as light as any ARTF

Very pretty 'plane. Nice scheme too :af I had one with a Webra T4 90 in it. I remember that it needed lots of differential on the ailerons and ruddering round the turns too. Great fun. Yours looks to have a tow release fitted in the centre section   $%&

More pics please!! :af

I've got one, with the now fixed Zenoah 23 in it. You're right, I've got about 40% rud/aileron mix, as it is definitely a left thumb plane. Got mine for 60 last year with all the gear, expect engine.
Precedent did make some good large scale kits. Also have the Turbulent, which is a great flyer.
When we get flying, I'll bring mine and have a sortie.  :af

This particular Aeronca also had a Webra 90 in it .

still has the ball joint on the throttle cable for the slide Carb !

above the fitters bench at Rolls-Royce was a big sign that said

" BUILD IT( engines that is ) AS THOUGH YOU ARE GOING TO FLY WITH IT "

This one is almost big enough to  do exactly that  :)

i have removed all plastic hinges and horns they seem OK but not worth the risk i will get some pictures done later
servos will be donated from another model servo /rx power will be by A123 cells
what material is best for wing struts i was looking at ali tube but not 100% on that they are used to take the strain on the wings as very short wing tubes fitted

I'm using a 17x8 prop. Seems the best, regarding thrust/noise/power.

The struts are load-bearing. On mine, they are flat ali sheet. More than strong enough. Have looped it.
It's not an aerobatic model. Roll is very slow. Just like to potter round, scale-like and feel it.
low, fly pasts are great, with the struts whistling in the airflow.

I have a copy of the 1996  SLEC/Precedent/Balsacraft catalogue before me as I write (I'm  hoarder :)

The 1/4 scale Aeronica Champ kit is advertised as 125.95.  They claim the original flew on a 60 size engine!!  It weighed in at a fraction under 5kg and carried up to 4.5 kgs of sweets as a toffee bomber.  It must have been very marginal at that but for a 2.667 metre (105") wingspan model 5kg seems extraordinarily light.  They claim there's room for a 32cc petrol engine.

Looks a very nice model as does the 1/3 scale Turbulent on the opposing page.  Precedent produced some interesting kits.  Not many are still available.  I think the Stampe and Fun Fly are the only ones.

Agree the load-bearing struts. Mine came with 3mm pianowire struts covered in balsa. One end had a clevis the other a shaped hook. Needless to say the hook came adrift! Managed to get the plane back down and now damage or stress to the aluminium wing tubes, which was nice. I replaced them with carbon tube and monster clevises. Seem to work fine now.

things are moving a bit slow on the champion at the moment as i have been playing around trying to get the right engine for the job and making sure it all runs fine on a test model before i fit it to the champion
the ailerons over time also the rudder have started to rub hard on the joints so after removing all hinges i have been slowly trimming them until they are ready to re-hinge as you can see from the picture also how well the paint work is cleaning up all down to the original builder

engine test run has gone well  :af on the test model
i had some problems with it not taking the fuel some time ago and put it in the shed thinking i may one day try again
what i have just found out is the inlet manifold has no grove so the carb pulse will only work on one  side once i realised this i turned the carb around and the engine is running fine at 6100rpm well pleased  :af

the only problem i had was the flywheel if i put the engine in the correct place 25mm higher the cowl will not go over the flywheel so with a larger dia spinner i can hide this point i hope
any one think it will cause a problem

and i will have to extend the prop adaptor by 20mm

As said Ron, I can get you copies of the plan done.  You know's where I am   ;)

On the A123 front and I know from your charging routine to you are not likely to experience the sudden voltage drop at the end of battery capacity but I spotted a good safety device from CSM in the last BMFA mag - over me cuppa this morning.   Transfers Rx power to a reserve battery automatically when main batt power drops to a user set level.  And it is only 15 squid.  Seems like a good idea for a model like this.

got the new exhaust pipe welded in place handy being an all steel exhaust
just making a new tank platform move it closer to the c of g then make a new servo mounting platform and the front end should be ready
also will move the engine mount just a tad over i made it to be adjustable until its ready for a permanent fix
pictures later /sorry if the pictures come out to big but its only rcmf that does this for some reason all other sites they fit in just perfect  $%&

looks good i have one to resore its has had a sc120 fs in it when it was built then a super tiger 91 now its mine i have 4 engines to put in it sc 120, rcv 90cd, zenoah 23 and a sc 91 fs,
its got a bit of damage to the tail wires, the sheet that runs down the back is broken, the cowl is battle damaged (full of holes) and it needs a new pair of wing struts
i could realy do with a plan have you found some where to copy it for you? if not if i could borrow it and get a copy done,

I would strongly advise you against that and just put one in.  ;)

i am slowly fitting all the electrics on mine
due to the fuel tank being moved back towards the c of g i have made up a new servo tray further back this may also help with the c of g as it will need some lead at the rear
its nearly ready for test runs once i get time to pick up hinges from the local model shop
