As others have said better, thanks Nigel, Gerry et al for maintaing this resource for so long.  It's provided many diversionary hours both during and out of working hours though I doubt my employers would have been so keen.  The great thing about a forum like this is that it's easy to search and find a wealth of info alll provided by a bunch of real individuals, mostly in the nicest sense oif the word.  I don't find fb that accomodating for searches or as easy to follow a conversation as is a forum.
I may not be a big poster but this site still felt like a community with characters that I've got to know,  Sort of Coronation Street but more relevant and more bullshite all at the same time.  Thanks to all, maybe see you around?

Michael,
Come over to www.flyingsites.co.uk
It is the same as this forum so you will
have no problems using it.
I copied and pasted something from here to flyingsites
even the emoji things worked

I dislike facebook with a passion, I rejoined this afternoon
now that I have found flyingsites is still active I will close facebook.

Obviously it is up to you what you do.

RCMF has been my homepage for many years, has taken over from magazines and has been source of much inspiration knowledge and amusement in all that time.

My thanks to our hosts and to all of the contributors over those years.

I also think that faceache is a poor substitute.

I was thinking of something on those lines but not as grand
as you are proposing. I will see if I can contact flyingsites

Well... what can I say?

Sad to see the end of a great forum,  but with dwindling numbers in recent years I guess kind of inevitable.  Things change,  the world moves on.  I joined here in 2005 having been a frequent poster on Usenet - I know one or two others on here were also regulars on rec.models.rc.air,  and later the uk equivalent.  But the traffic on Usenet diminished as online forums such as this took over.  And the un-moderated Usenet could be a bit of a battleground at times with the spammers and idiots making up a fair portion of the posts on there,  something that sensible moderation kept at bay on here.

So, what next?  I do have a facebook account and use it sparingly.  I just clicked the "Add" button on the RCMF facebook page - though I reckon we might need a "real life" to forum name translation chart for some people!  A few are obvious,  some less so!

Memories over the years?  Well one was bumping into somebody wearing an RCMF cap at a Blackbushe Show and asking him, "So who the heck are you, then?"  And getting the slightly unexpected response,  "I'm Wizz"!  And then there was the Mayhem Team - formed on here to fly at the Hop Farm Show.  Lots of photos around of some of us wearing silly hats on the flightline - and even one of Wizz in a pink shirt if I remember correctly!

Anyway...  I'm sure there will be lots more reminiscences (spelling?) on here before the final shutdown.  Now I wonder what my flyingsites userid/password was...

Sorry Bob but I think that does RCMF a huge disservice!  It will be ok for general tittle-tattle (if you like it sequential and easily lost or forgotten) but a very, very poor substitute for what we had here.

I whole heartedly support efforts to encourage Mike to join the new group, along with everyone else I like to think the community has provided him (and many others) great support at times of need and to have a place to go is great - but it won't be the same, not by a very long chalk.

But do join Mike!

I don't know. At least photos are easy to load! I'd like to find a way to preserve the build threads and all the tech stuff though. Anyone have ideas for that? Plenty of computer bods on here.

The Facebook Group doesn't have to be "Closed", I set it up this way to begin with, it can go public but we need a couple of admins over there to filter-out the spammers because you'll get plenty of those!
Personally I would like to keep it closed. I left the 'fake' BMFA page because of morons and it's that sort of thing that is putting off members here from going to FB. There are plenty of open pages to slag each other off on, I would like to keep.this one private.  What do others think?

Re migration to 'flyingsites', if its the same host software Is there any possibility of a database merge?

Me thinks such a global exercise might not be a walk in the park and, based on the relative sizes and activities of the two, I guess is very likely to be trying to fit a gallon in a pint, no, 1/2 pint pot.   Either that or Wiz and Gerry have been stringing us a yarn all these years!

It might be useful for preserving specific threads (Mudders) but even then all the images will be lost won't they or, at the very least, require manually uploading again?   Life's too short ....

Dear All
I have received a reply from the owner of Flyingsites.
He thought he was undergoing a spam attack as a lot
of people were registering on the site.

He is running the site single handed which is commendable
and openly admits that he does not have the expertise that
is prevalent on this forum.

I think he is pleased that people are using his site again.

If I can make a plea from the heart.

Would you rather use a site where a single person is running it
for the benefit of others. And it is British you know.  ;D
I have heard that somewhere before.

Or use a site that is only interested in making vast sums of money.

I will leave it with you.

Oh well, as many have said, it has been fun while it lasted. I guess I will go back into the wilderness again and do my own thing. I have tried Facebook twice in the past 8 years but closed my account after a few weeks each time. I found it far too intrusive even with all the privacy options turned on. Permanently bombarded with lists of people who I really should connect with or who knew me.

Have fun guys what ever you are doing.

I take it there is a back up of the database?

Is the database MySQL or SQLite?

What are your/the rules regarding databases please.

I have found those answers.

Well look folks, here's the skinny.  RCMF costs around £550 a year to run and one of the reasons the costs are that high is that we need to rent hosting capable of handling a 25Gb database (it's probably a bit bigger now).  Most "cheap" hosting packages limit the database size to only around 500Mb or impose some other limitation such as bandwidth.  We learned early on, there's no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to hosting.

I used to cover some of the costs through advertising but over the last 6-9 months, ad revenue has tailed-off considerably due to changes in Google's terms, a global reduction in ad rates and increasingly more people choosing not to see ads and, of course, a reduction in traffic to the site.

For the first 8 or 9 years, I underwrote the costs as part of my general business plus a few sporadic donmations, then we had a few good years where we were directly selling ads and, more recently, relying solely on Google ads when commercial ads started to dwindle.  All in all, we've just about broken even over the years but I really need to find a sustainable way of funding RCMF if it were to continue.  We've tried the donations method previously and, while a few generous souls dug-deep, most didn't feel able to for one reason or another.

Another couple of influencing factors - GDPR - if RCMF were to continue, we need to make the site GDPR compliant and also be able to find an additional ~£100 a year to instal an SSL security certificate on the site which, although not absolutely essential, is highly desirable.  It's not all about cost though - personally, I'm no longer flying and I'm ridiculously busy work-wise to start messing around with GDPR and SSL certificates - god knows, it's consumed most of my time on client's websites over the last few months!

I do agree though, it would be a shame to lose it all.

If anyone has any ideas though, my ears are open and I think Gerry would be up for carrying on given a wee shove?

I am very sorry to hear of your decision but I understand why.

Thank you so much for all the effort you have put in over the years, I have enjoyed being part of it and will miss it.

Will see what the faceache group looks like as I use faceache for other similar interest forums at present.

Thank you again

I think that due to the fact that the bandwidth is greatly reduced compared to the peak years and with a bit of database optimisation we could probably run on a shared server rather than the current dedicated one. This would slash costs to the point where a few low donations from here and there should cover costs.
I'm thinking no advertising and removing unused features etc.
I did say to Nigel yesterday that I was easy either way but the more I think about it I would be sorry to see the 15+ years of RCMF disappear.

Dear Nigel/Gerry
I think you can see by the posts that everyone was shocked
by the RCMF closure announcement yesterday.
I thought personally that a little bit more activity was being seen
on the site.

As you can see there is enormous affection for this forum
generated over so many years of it's existence. Yes we have our
ups and downs but that is all part and parcel of it.

It is also very clear to see that you are decent people and not
in it for the money and you are running this site for the benefit
of others. Which in my book is highly commendable.

I think we are all guilty of taking you both and this forum for granted.
I for one am deeply sorry for that. My dear old Mum, God rest her soul,
used to say to me, You don't know what you have until it is gone.

In this case there was never a truer word spoken.

I hope we can find away forward which is beneficial to all parties.
As you say Gerry it would be such a shame to lose 15 years of what
was probably a big part of your life.

If you decide, which I hope you do to keep this forum going.
I will make a point of trying to get people to come back to what
is a proper model forum.

If I could modify slightly my signature piece, it would read like this.

Never in the field of model websites, was so much owed by so many to so few.

I think that sums it up perfectly.

In closing, I do feel a bit of a dick and I might have peaked a bit early
in advising people to migrate to FS yesterday. I was in panic mode.

Although there is no reason why we could not use the other site also
to help keep that one going as well. The person running it seems a really
nice chap.

Thank you.
Regards Phil Goff

I think that due to the fact that the bandwidth is greatly reduced compared to the peak years and with a bit of database optimisation we could probably run on a shared server rather than the current dedicated one. This would slash costs to the point where a few low donations from here and there should cover costs.
I'm thinking no advertising and removing unused features etc.
I did say to Nigel yesterday that I was easy either way but the more I think about it I would be sorry to see the 15+ years of RCMF disappear.

I too would miss this forum  look in most days,    Hence my handle "It's not Easy, "

How about setting a  Paypal A/C  and enable  re registration   on this site for say a min charge of say a fiver  (Less 0r more )  for  membership  as a none profit forum,   No none hobby related  ads  + keep our private data safe too,  would that be enough to keep the site up and running & preserve  all our  forum input data ?..  as a side note RCSB  is $20.00 per year ..

Best regards to All Pete Fullard ..

Not many people post much in the way of "RC" related stuff though - it's become more of a general "sounding off" forum - maybe that needs to be enforced a little better by the moderators?

Hundreds of pages of "guff" won't exactly be helping the site stay on-topic with regards the search engines spidering, with the net result of less traffic due to the website being seen as less relevant to RC-related topics.

There's a lot you can do to resurrect the website, increase the traffic and see a little better return on the adverts...

I understand that it isn't just a cost thing - but if the running costs could be borne by the members, could the site still carry on? I for one would see this site as easily worth £100 a year - couple of quid a week. I wonder how others feel?

To elaborate on that - my newspaper costs a bit over a pound a DAY! If it came to a choice between that and this site - bye, bye Telegraph.

Ok, hold the front page

Forget everything I said about closing for business.  We're not.

I am flabbergasted but I'm delighted to say an anonymous benefactor has stepped-forward to bale us out with sufficient funding to allow us to continue for at least another two years and perhaps quite a bit more when topped-up with a little advertising revenue.

Yes, you heard that right so, forget what I said, ok?  I need to go have a lay down now, I'm flabbergasted but very, very thankful.  Until now, and after the flying bug left me a couple of years ago, I presumed this place was dying a death but I now realise just how much it means to so many people.  That, in itself, is very humbling.  I better go tell Gerry the news!

Thank you all.

Great news. There are still options as well, the fiver to continue sounds all right. And we now have a FB page dedicated to the site so that's good too. And joining flyingsites is not bad idea either! Well done to the benefactor.
