Pilot Zlin 526 Cowl
« on: December 19, 2018, 16:06:27 PM »
I have one of these (the "19-25 size" one, not the bigger one) which I built back in the 80s (jeez, that was 35 years ago - I must be getting seriously old) that I originally powered with a pre-surpass OS40 4-stroke, and it flew very nicely; very aerobatic and wonderful at flick-manoeuvres  with that powerful rudder, but it would only bite back if you were silly-enough to try to 3-point it. It was very quiet, and I used to take it to work to fly at lunchtimes on the football pitch behind the factory (yes, it did nice loops around the crossbar). It's this one:

Anyway, I was looking for something else on the workshop when I saw it sitting there - a little grubby but complete EXCEPT for the cowl which I've somehow lost. I think it would adapt quite well to a 500w electric setup so before I make something I wondered if anyone happened to have a spare cowl that they don't want?

The plan is in the Outerzone archive here, and like most of those Pilot plans it includes full-size drawings of all the pre-cut parts so you could build from it.

Pete have you thought of Vortex (I think) he used to have a very good selection of cowls, I used him to supply a Zlin cowl which was a good likeness for my Acrowot. Whether he is still trading is another matter though.

Thanks for the thought, but I've tried to contact them several times over the last few years and never got a peep out of them - either they've ceased trading or they've heard of me (probably the latter!)

Have you considered making the cowl yourself?
It could be made using rolled ply and a balsa nose block.
You might even get away with having only the nose block removable.
Refer to G.W.’s excellent book for ideas.
I noticed there’s a slight curveture when viewed from above but this is hardly noticeable, or you could add some balsa on the outside and then sand the curveture.

Yes, which is why the original post ended with "...so before I make something I wondered if...".
