Broadband pricing and service. BT price hikes AGAIN
« on: July 04, 2018, 07:34:08 AM »
I have had BT broadband and phone for many years (since 2004 ish) and in general have been happy with it. I currently get around 36Mb download and 14Mb upload speeds which is quite good and ample for my needs. I use Netflix a lot so have unlimited download capacity.

All good so far BUT I currently pay c£65 a month inc my call package, (actual charged for calls amount to a couple of quid per month.)

BT are about to raise their prices again for the 2nd time this year so I have decided to see what else is available however my main concern is Email, having had my email address for so many years and a big user of Online banking, forums etc it will be a major job to remember let alone notify everyone of my new details.

Is it possible to retain an email address for say six months when you leave a provider? or has anyone found an easy way of notifying people of an email address change?

Also anyone got any recommendations for BB/phone providers please
Basic Research is what I do - when I don't know what I'm doing!.

Contact BT and tell them you want to cancel your deal with them and that you shop elsewhere. Make sure to tell them you are not impressed with their prices.
Tell them you can get a better deal for less money.  Do your homework so you can quote a few deals.
They will fall over themselves to offer you a new deal with a much lower price.

I have done this four times with them (so far), and each time they will offer their "new customer" intro rates. . . If you still quibble about it, sometimes they will offer an even lower rate than the intro rate.

Have fun,
B.C.

There is a way, but it will be costly. You can subscribe to BTís Premium Email Service which allows people who move to another supplier to continue using their existing BT email address.
However itís not cheap, £5.00 per month at the moment, but with BTís price increases, this is going up on the 22nd Aug 2018 to a whopping £7.50 per month!.
So really itís probably worth biting the bullet and just telling everyone your new email address!

I do believe BT are going to lose a lot of customers with these exorbitant and all too frequent price increases, especially when there are now so many cheaper alternatives.

Thanks Brian, I'll certainly give it a try but I doubt if I'll have fun.

if your email address is xxx@btinternet.com it will work with other providers.

BT tried very hard to close down these addresses, with various offers, threats etc, but I think there were so many of them they just gave up trying. My personal email account is a xxx@btinternet.com and I access that via a BT account and a non-BT account.

My ntlworld email ceased working when I left them. Sally left BT a year ago, I bet there is a huge spam folder on BT now if they have not closed it down!

Thanks Pooh, can you provide any pointers as to what I have to do to access my xxx@btinternet.com email address via say TalkTalk?

My email account sits on BT Yahoo, so if I want to access it anywhere I just use a web browser like Chrome, go to the site, click on "email" and log in. You need your password and email address of course.

I have used Gmail for many, many years. I can also port any other email address I might have into the Gmail account.
I can access it from whichever ISP I am using in what ever country. It was important for me as I travelled around a lot UK, Egypt and now France.

I use Outlook for email, can access my account from anywhere...

Wouldnt touch Talk Talk with a barge pole....

I was previously with Plusnet until I moved...currently with BT on an 18 month contract. Will probably look elsewhere if their charges are too high....

It will certainly work with other providers,  but unless there's a dodge I'm unaware of you'll need to pay for the premium mail service.  That started off relatively cheap at £1.60 a month in 2013,  went up to £5 in 2016 and is on the way up again shortly as already mentioned...

You could just register a domain with another provider then add a mailbox to it - that way you're free from issue when/if you ever switch broadband supplier.

Couple of quid a month and maybe a tenner for a year for the domain, no hassles.

Or simply get a Hotmail address as I have done. Or Google mail,  GMX or any of many.

Now having extended my BT contract at a cheaper price  I have some time to look at options and have already set up a Gmail account and will gradually let everyone know my new details over the next few months.

That's what I do.  I've had a couple of domains for probably 15+ years, and use various email addresses through them.

But I, and family members, still also use the btinternet addresses we first got 20+ years ago.  Maybe the latest price hike will be my incentive to switch completely away from using the btinternet addresses!
