Oh Ringstead bay.
What a nice place to fly.
Was working down at blamford forum back in May, and managed to fly there every night of the week after work.
Put around 6 hours on the new ceres lift.
Real nice looking out over Waymouth and the sea.
Shame I had to come back home really.
I'm hoping for another trip down there before the summer ends.

I was going to try and fly the purbecks when I was there, but it was pretty much on ringstead all week.

Smashing part of the world and some ok slopes too.

Yeah that sounds great.

Ringsteads lift is super smooth straight off the sea.  :af

Steve

I haven't been down that far yet flying. I have seen photos of people flying off the cliffs at seatown east of there.

My normal flying sites are (copy lat longs into google maps)

Portland for SW-W 50.534848, -2.453474 probably works NW but not experienced that yet. good landing zone for mouldies

Sutton Poyntz for SW-SSE 50.661189, -2.414301 I don't like much east here, but its flyable. good landing zone for mouldies

Ringstead for SSW 50.640788,-2.348673 good landing zone for mouldies

Worth Matravers for SW-W 50.593735,-2.058613 West is a bit bumpy due to the hill on the other side of the bay. in SW-SSW landing zone okish for mouldies if you have crows. So far we have been landing near the slope lip without getting over the fence climibing thingy (can't remember their name lol).

Maiden Castle for NNW-NE 50.696915,-2.470273 not very mouldy friendly unless you can land on the fiels in front of the slope.....I have only flown foam there. also watch out forrotor between the ramparts. you can fly off the middle one, but be careful not o get sucked into the rampart (misses). foamies + maiden castle + northerly = fun =  If you crash + keep yers fit.

Always on the look out for more slopes though :)

rcfanuk, Charmouth has a flying site right there.  On the other side of the river from Charmouth town centre is about a mile of cliffs, I think the main part is known as Cain's Folly, those are nice flying cliffs in southerlies.

Here's some directions:
"To get there, turn left out of Newlands Holiday camp, after about 300 metres turn sharp left and follow the narrow road that leads to the top of the hill (a dead end).  Just after you go over the cattle grid there is a car park (free) on the right.  Look for the gate on the right that marks the path that leads down to the cliffs and the flying site."

Four I can think of there are Portland cliffs, White Nothe cliffs, Sutton Poyntz bowl and Maiden Castle.

Here's a link to a Google map, move it to Weymouth and you'll see these four sites.  Others on this forum will know more about these sites than me.

Just got back from a week down by Weymouth, unfortunately not enough wind/lift for a Venom, might have got away with an Allula.

This looks to be a good site, we'll have to check it out this summer.

Thanks Stu.    :uk:

Ringstead for SSW 50.640788,-2.348673 good landing zone for mouldies

no worries :)

Yeah its mouldy compatible. Although its not my favourite hill on that list. It is ideal if the wind is right and the weather is marginal (wet)...as you can just jump in yer car.  Portland is probably my fav :)....if you are happy chucking a plane off a cliff.

Ringstead.

Any advice for this site, wind --s--ssw, is it packed with walkers and paragliders etc  in the summer months being a NT site, hopefully looking to have a few weekends there this year.    :af

Yeah wind SSW or so is good. sutton poyntz is good too for S with a bit of room either side. its less busy from groccles, the odd walker, mountainbiker, horse rider, sheep. jelly fish tend to fly other hills from my experience.

Yeah I think it can be busy up ringstead, cars to crash into too if you get it wrong (I heard a story that a few years a go someone crashed into the side of a Renault 5 door and put a whole in it...the renault that is), I don't tend to fly up there on days when it might be popular. Its more of a reserve place for me and my mate if the weather is ropey. although my last session there a couple of weeks back was ok. portland and chapmans poole are way better....although the smooth lift flatters and spoils you hehe. go on.....give portland a go.....you'll love it. just walk back for the landing :).

Thanks RustyKnee + Mr ED, Ringstead sounds like it could get busy with a few targets, your other site of Worth Matravers (chapmans pool ) i know well but have never seen any flying there.

Perhaps i will give it a go------ land of the brave-----????

Post 6 has most sites locally with position and wind direction, there are other smaller sites I haven't flown. You can copy the lat longs into google maps. PM me nearer the time if you fancy meeting up for a burn :).

Cheers Stu :af  I'l do as you suggested regarding the lat/longs on google.   I had seen your previous post but thought i'd better check for any "Do's & donts" as i wouldnt want to mess up any possible flying site agreements for the local flyers :banghead:

Ah yes...completely forgot to answer that bit. Most sites don't have frequency control, so keep yer eyes peeled. I generally fly on channel 70 (But is synth so I can change), or 2.4GHz. Some times the christchurch club fly at Ringstead, if they are there they have a peg board (A twirly wind sock thingy). Common sense really, if you see someone flying ask em what channel. I don't know of any power clubs near the sites listed. Although I am switching over to 2.4GHz so I can be a flying nomad :). Ringstead is also national trust, so I guess insurance is required....I find it best to have it anyway....just incase.

Not many Stu's generally :)....although I know a few online playing on the PS3, can get confusing if nick names aren't used on the voice comms :) (My other geeky passtime :) )

Wicked. I love chapman pool. Was up Portland today. Was very pleasant. Smooth lift. Even managed to get all 1.4 kilos of ballast in my tragi :).

Would just like to Add ,

Portland Is the most amazing flying around the south of Dorset  :af, Incredible lift in even light conditions . This is a link to a Live Wind Anemometer in Portland harbour.
    Portland 2 Wind Data (http://www.weather-file.com/portland2/)

I have flown here nearly every week for the past year or so , I would also say that i have flown here in WNW, pushing NW , W ,WSW pushing SW . Both NW and SW depends on Wave direction , cos on occasion with the wind in the same direction there is No lift. That is not often though. Also its nice to share the Skys with Seagulls , Kestrels and the odd Peregrine Falcon , Its a Beautiful site . Landing Zone is Good But the Rotor is not for the faint of heart .

As far as Sutton poyntz goes its not only a Good slope (Best south slope i know ) its a Bowl so wind can be a bit variable in its direction so i would say from SW to SE South being the Best ,also its a Nice spot to pick up thermals from as they flow up the valley from Osmington. Great Landing Zone no rotor at all , Another very pretty slope you can see all across Weymouth and out to Portland. Buzzards and seagulls show you where to get the lift

Ringstead is a convenient Slope , you drive, park open boot and fly , the walking involved is about 50 meters from the car , it flys well with a SW to S wind ,I would say lift is good , but not excellent , the buildings on the farm create some very strange pockets of lift , which get yer nerves twitching at times .

There is also another site called Chalbury Hill fort , It faces for East wind only and lift is good , Landing is a little dodgy if your to close to the ends of the slope because the wind washes around the sides and can take the unsuspected by surprise . But on the top its fine as long as its not coming in to fast.

Ive flown alot around Weymouth Portland and Dorchester . Its a nice place to be , I live on Portland and Westcliff is only a 3 min walk(although i take my car)
Heres a link to a video of Portland and Ringstead just to give you an Idea

somehow managed to miss your reply bob :). Nice addition.

A note on the portland wind data site....it only works properly with internet explorer....it doesn't work in mozilla or any other browser i have tried, and most annoyingly my phone! but then if you are at portland you can through your phone up in the air and see which way it blows....or grass if you like.

Ringstead was good today, quite busy though. couple of muppets parked where they shouldn't....they didn't seem to mind glider flybys.....they would if 3 kilos of tragi came through the back window at speed though haha.

I may be able to get out for a bit of Portland fun on Sat too, hope it doesnt swing any more south or we'll end up at sutton poo or ringpiece ::)

Got an annoying repair on the skorp to get done first, had a really slow motion tip drap and flop over tonight and it broke the machined Ali elevator horn! Bummer bad luck batman!  Serves me right for going and flying at Creech, one of the worst slopes around!

You will love portland, landing is ok too, just be weary o the odd gust of turbulance.

Was blowing nicely, the harbour anemometer was saying 20 ish knots.

Only thing that made it "interesting" was the helicopter doing laps/rides fo some local event or other, he realised we were there and we stayed low when he came over.

Twas an excellent bit of a fly  ;D

So now Ive the incentive to sort my MB out  ???, and Fix the Apache  ???and also build the Speedo when the new Fuse comes . ;D

                   Good day i say ,
poxy steam fair helicopter Though  >:(

Gotta say though , its days like this that can give you a good feeling about a hobby that sometimes makes you feel like crap , outta 4 planes only 1 is airworthy , and what Ive put down to procrastinating (putting it off till tomorrow) really was a lack of wanting to make time to fix them . The faster i Fix em , the faster they break .
But if i get days like today , it just makes the Bench work more appealing . If you know what I'm trying to say heheh

But i realised that we should use the tools we have , why have a 10 turn 1km course when we can have a bigger course all along the west face , and set up some times to beat each other , maybe 6km or something , i know its all about the turns in F3F but this isnt practise for that , this is just for a laugh and Its something a little bit different between Westcliff Flyers
Ade can set a good time (cos his Skorp is a bit quick)  We could try and beat it  :af, set a Portland World record for a 6 km Time trial.

Just an idea , but i recon we could use google earth to pinpoint a coarse . What say you ?

I'd like to set up a proper 100m f3f course one day. Stu and I were planning on using 3 walkie talkies to sort out a cheap buzzing system. We'll have to brig it all along next time :af

Be good practice for the Welsh open.

The 6km course would be fun but I dont think we'd be bothered with the long walk out to the buzzing points!

I'll be down in your neck of the woods this weekend, camping nr Corfe Castle, so hope to fit some flying in round cycling; walking; drinking alternatives.

SW-ly forecast tomorrow,  so was thinking of Kimmeridge Down (Smedmore Hill) in the afternoon and hopefully Portland Sat or Sunday.

I've marked down several sites frome the "slopehunter" map - any other suggestions?

Hopefully meet up with some of you guys sometime.... :ev

If its westerly, St Aldehams near worth matravers over looking chapmans pool, excellent coastal air & its an easy flat walk from the car park.

Smedmore good in the afternoon when the sea breeze builds up but the landing !
lots of curl over best to land on the front face.

Smedmore's overlooking Kimmeridge, and St Aldhelm's is another name for St Alban's Head, near Worth Matravers just west of Swanage,  was ace this arvo at a steady 20+ mph

I've marked a few sites on this  >> Google Maps <<  (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=101885999264229347213.000488124e1e311de1512&t=h&z=11)  list for future reference if it's any help.

I'm sure there are loads more - have a look at the http://www.slopehunter.co.uk/ (http://www.slopehunter.co.uk/) site & click on More Sites>SlopeSoaring Sites Map too

You'll sure have some fun... ;)

Just got back from a holiday in Swanage.  Unfortunately the winds swung NW for the week but I did get out to Kimmeridge for the strong SW and rain at the start.
There was mist everywhere but Kimmeridge just popped out clear so I flew from the carpark. Never flown coastal before so not really sure what to make of it??
The wind was pretty strong and Kimmeridge is what 20mish high? I gather the higher winds create a more narrow compressed lift band?
I flew with the gulls and the combination of the wind, rain and sea at the bottom made it quite exhilarating! Nice landing area in the field by the car park.
I only had an expenable old M60, I couldn't seem to get much height with it. Contentend myself with runs across the front with a pump at each end.  Didn't dare go below the cliff edge height and didn't push out to far. I followed the gulls as the lift seemed quite variable.
We went back another day to go crab fishing and fossil hunting. I would have loved some more coast time but the off shore winds put paid to that.
I reckon a day trip to Portland is in order :af

yeah I'll have a think....led strips can be had cheap off the bay of e in various colours....but they are 12V. I have tested them down to 8v, dimmer....but probably ok. they hardly use any juice, so maybe a dedicated small 3s lipo driving it/them. I reckon of the translucent corroflute wing they could go inside illuminating it from the inside out and not adding any drag.

remind me to grab a couple of sheets of correx for ya too before we fly again.

mate couldnt we use something like this ?

                    LED Color:White

Operates on 3x AA batteries (not including)

LED can save 70% energy and have 4 times the life of similar incandescent string lights

Total 30 LED bulbs

Just fairy lights but uses 3AA batterys , could always cut the amount down , but maybe they aint brighht enough .

I thought 2 colours mate ,
white for the bottom , the brightest , across wing and along the fuse ,

Maybe Red the same cross on top , I will donate my fox to the Experiment , on account it will take an amount of weight without a problem
ie  battery pack or lipo at 3.2v   , and its easy to cut push something in , then glue it up hahaa

Just an idea m8 , it will allow me to fly after work in the winter  ;)

might be fiddly....but it might be more elgent to use surface mount LEDs and fine wire . tape the wire on and dig a tiny pocket for the led's, but it might be fragile. I will see if I can find an led at work to see how it might work.

I did this morning.  ;)
Much easier than a nasty fully crossed Sutton Poyntz was yesterday, but I had to feel happy with the rebuilt Brio before throwing it off over the sea. It'll be the same with the Needle. Only had a bit over an hour as I had to blast back to Oxford before the Carnival got into full swing.

Personally ,
and i did say this to John ,
If you are sure the CoG is somewhere near , you range check and make sure all your surfaces are working . It must be the best way to maiden a plane . Wow what a Rush when its off and responding to stick inputs  :af

Anyway , im off out for a fly over the cliffs right now . 25 knots WSW and that can only assist in my terrorising of the Seagulls .

          WoW  :nananana:
The Winds are 26 knots gusting to 29 knots , This is taken from The Anemometer in Portland Harbour. ;)

Its a lot more on the cliff , gotta be up near the Speedos Limit , i recon 30 knots Gusting 35 . (remember it'll go in stronger winds off a slope)

I feel totally Exhilarated , and exhausted from an hour and a quarter standing and flying in it .

Man i am one lucky sucka to have it on my doorstep

Hi, I am new to the forum, but I am a portlander who moved away with the RAF a few years ago.

I am down at my parents in Dorchester this weekend and have my zagi wing with me, any suggestions of where to go.  I have not flown it yet!

Any ideas would be good but not to far from Dorchester.  Don't think I can make gods country (Portland) this time but the inlays still live in fortuneswell so maybe next time.

Well m8 ,

It may have been gods before you moved away , But now its my Island  :nananana:.
um unfortunately its going to be very East for the next couple of days , so only Chalbury Hill fort .
Which is off of combe valley road Preston if it helps , if it swings South East then Sutton Poynts Bowl will be best  :)

Me I just flew Portland in a North wind from blacknore forte  :nananana:

I launched from the radio mast and took it round the corner , first time Ive ever tried and the lift was amazing , just a shame that the path is so thin , cos i had to walk back round to land it . But at least i don't have to go to Dorchester for North winds now.  ;)

Im off to maiden the

    RAPIDO SPEEDO , ::)

auw is 410 grams , so about 1 Ilb near as damn .
This is 25 grams heavier than a standard build , so 1 oz  more weight for a foam /obeechi wing with wing bandage .

Im very happy with the Results , although im a little worried because there is Less Diheadral than on the original , so wings are level . Im not sure how this will effect the flight envelope , i guess it shouldnt be a problem .

Wish me luck cos its about to try a 200 Ft cliff launch for a maiden Flight  :af

Well weather sucked after all , :-\
but the Sun came out at 3 oclock the winds where 15 mph West so off i went for play on my cliffs . :af
It wasnt spectacular , but it wasnt bad , the Rapido speedo performed as expected , Man its so fast that its crazy .
Had an hour or so Hooning around , great fun , cracked the fuse behind the repair i had made , But a little Zap will touch it back up , you do not realise how good it is to have wings that just splt apart on impact instead of sturdy bolt on ones that stay more solid than the fuse .

Great fun anyway , and a few cracks is not the end of the world .

Title: Re: Dorset Is Chuffing Klass Slopers
Post by: bobbyr on December 19, 2010, 11:36:26 AM
Yes Mate  ^-^ , off the cliffs

i really would like to have a go at Night flying  :af,
The cliffs aren't as scary as most people think , your guaranteed lift if its in the right direction , and a nice steady 10mph wind on the cliffs is easily equal to a 15/20 on a slope with regards to lift anyway , the problem will be seeing where to land , but the fields for landing in are large enough to kinda go anywhere .
Got lots to build at the moment , and all my spare cash is tied up in new servos, battery's and all the other components needed to finish 3 brand new models(Reaper/Alula and Carb Typhoon) and 1 repaired mini blade DS to re-kit out  :D

Lots to do and as I'm Santa again this year :o , and not much time to do it all.

Oh the Joys of Parenthood  :uk:

Good News for Locals,

I have Found a New Flying site on portland , Easily accessable for East to South East , Great Lift as with any cliffs ,
Although Landing is restricted a bit , Had a great hour there yesterday at 5.30 in the evening in 5 mph SE wind with the Alula . it was obvious that it would work well in bigger winds .
Personally i wouldn't want to fly Big Moldy planes there , but overall its a nice site.
             The place ,
Bumpers lane    :af    if you look on google maps put in Bumpers lane Portland then look at satellite image and go to the end of the lane at the cliff edge . it has public access but has working quarry's around so park on the road outside .

Well ,
Looked at the weather forcast for today , looked E maybe SE . so checked portland wind readings live and it was SE @ 10 knots .
So loaded the car up .
Typhoon , Miniblade ,Reaper, Fox,Speedo and the Alula .
Drove to the White horse track , carefully navigating down the track with more holes than Blackburn Lancashire.
walked over the back of the field to find .

BLOODY  NOTHING,  NOT A BLOODY breath of wind , even the Alula was just circling and landing . :banghead:

Moral of this story is . Don't go Over prepared , on account when the wind gods feck you over its more trips to the car  :banghead:

Oh well the weekend don't look much more promising , bungee over the field it may end up

But I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a steady 15mph wind  :xx,

Nice re flight of the Phoon at Sutton Poyntz Bowl today  :af .
Rusty Knee was there with Pinky ripping around (Vikos) , although it was a little bumpy in patches  .
still satisfying setting the flaps for a more regulated Braking
system so cheers for that Stu  :af.

Such a lovely place , shame it was so straight on , didn't give the bowl much chance to be as good as it can be .  But still nicer than staying at home .

West winds coming , so the cliffs will be the place to be for the next couple of weeks , if anyone is interested in having a go , give me a shout , but chances are if its going off on west cliff , i will already be over there  :uk:

Hi guys i will be down in Dorset last week in July/first week in Aug...I flew the cliffs at Portland with BobbyR last year, I hope to get some flying in whilst I'm down your way...Mr E (Slopetrash) will be in the area, so perhaps a group fly-in might be the thing to go for (Portland Speed trials anyone?)..
Anyone fly other than Sat /Sun...traffic from Ringwood to Portland on those day can be a bit of a Bummer...mid week would be good.
I have flown Ringstead an Win Green introductions to other sites would be good...
BobbyR, I will PM you when I'm down there....whats your best days?

I'm off work this week and next so was thinking about booking a few days down in Dorset.... currntly theres a nice gaff showing up on laterooms but it is in Sherbourn so appears to be a bit of a drive to Portland, I am planning at least one day on a slope somewhere, will probably only bring the Needle, Sunbird (if its finished) and maybe the Binary 900 (DLG) so I can leave the car seats up for the trip..

Any thoughts on suitable locations to fly - portland looks like it might be on the list.  From XCWeather, it looks like it might be anything from W to SW or even North... and light too....

Dont forget the purbecks ? you can fly most directions if you dont mind a short walk and with the prevalling sea breeze popping up in the afternoon it can be northly winds in poole but southerly along the coast,
smedmore overlooking kimmeridege is a good slope but a tight frontside landing !
wessex hang & paragliding site lists a few suitable slopes.

So looks like the wind is going to be N - NNE for the next couple of days - I was going to bring the Needle and Sunbird but now the Sunbird is in bits so ust the Needle and I may bring a 900mm span DLG.....

Are there any slopes which aren't S - SW facing?  $%&

East creech hill overlooking creech farm campsite,  N-NW, park by road and 10 min stroll up hill, good landing, trees at bottom of hill thou,
West side of corfe castle can fly N-NE to east, short, steep walk, not the best of slopes but flyable, landing ok, some BIG gorse bushes on slope!
If a sea breeze pops up you can also fly east to south east at swyre head, 20 min walk, fantastic slope, good landing.

Dear Modellers,

I have been asked to write to you by my fellow club members as it has been brought to the attention of the National Trust warden that a fellow enthusiast has been using electric deducted fan models at the Ringstead site. It has also been noted that the flying of this model was low, fast and above the cars parked at the site.

Our understanding of the National Trustís rules states that only non-powered models are permitted at the site, therefore this behaviour could jeopardise our hobby there. I hope you can pass this information on to your members, so they, like ours, can continue to use Ringstead as we have done in the past.

 Thanks

We get the same thing at Devil's Dyke which is a National Trust site.  The glider flyers know the NT policy about not having powered planes and stick to it.  But random members of the public see the flying and think anything goes, and turn up with EDF jets etc.  Hard to control that random element.

Hi, as some posts about #155, creech hill car park is about 1/2 hr from the ferry in poole and always a good place to check the wind direction to start with, you can fly most directions in the purbecks if you dont mind walking 15-20 mins.

Thanks
