Flapperons or Spoilers
« on: February 17, 2015, 17:02:53 PM »
Would be interested on your views on which is best for a slope soarer, Flaps or Spoilers. The glider I am talking about does not have flaps fitted so I am using flapperons but would it be better to reverse the flapperons into spoilers.I know flaps will slow it down and the spoiler will not but they will kill the lift on landing. What is best????

BOTH.

I use them on a side slider so I have full proportional control. Once I have explored the limits either way before the ailerons start to fail I set these as max travel so I cannot kill the ailerons just when needed.

+1 on Bad Raven's post.

I use spoilerons on a few gliders, most notably my Prodij (full span ailerons). I find them very effective at killing lift, sometimes scarily so.

Another plus for spoilerons, but if it's at all possible, retrofitting electric airbrakes is a better option.

what spoliers allow you to do is hang on the elevator and create buckets of drag with less chance of stalling.
flaps don't
I know you believe you understand what you think i said, but i am not sure you realise that what you think you heard is not what i meant.
