Holiday In The UK
« on: March 26, 2011, 20:58:45 PM »
Would like to get some feedback on either good or great UK holiday destinations with excellent slopes for this summer.

Would like it to be a fly from the car park rather than a huge hike. Also, needs to be close to a good B&B and PUB!

Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Jim

no, i'm not really...
Staggy has 3 fly from the car park slopes as well as caravan sites at the back of the hill, and in the village pubs, hotel/pub and b&b's
The beaches ( proper sand, not that northern shingle guff ) of Perranporth and Hayle/St Ives are 20 mins either side ( both also have slopeable dunes ) but theres also Chapel Porth which is 15 min walk from the slopes.
Depending on when you come The Redruth club are also having our display on the 6/7th of August
Theres also loads of slopes on the South coast, but most require a little walking.

Staggy must be good, we have a guy drive all the way from Hamburg! to come fly here for a week in the summer.

I know you believe you understand what you think i said, but i am not sure you realise that what you think you heard is not what i meant.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Firstly, I am based in Aylesbury just between the M40 & M1.

South downs sounds good but where?

Also, where is Staggy? Are we talking Cornwall near Falmouth?

Cheers.

;D yes, a bit like when yanks ask if england is near london

Staggy is north coast, between perranporth and st ives, falmouth is south coast, and i bet a hell of a lot hotter as the north coast is currently smothered in sea mist

I had a great time flying the cliffs of the Isle of Wight last summer. I am going again in April.
I like to fly with both feet on the ground.

I'd go to wales/south wales... you've got everything there from amazing coastal sites to simply jaw dropping inland geography... you'd think someone had made it just for us slopers.

I go for a week every year, it beats cornwall in every way... and I live in cornwall ;)

Yeah but if he want's park and fly he's severely limiting his options here in south Wales.

The Bwlch, but no nearby B&B or pub! :-\

Will we be seeing you again this year Pasty?- look fwd to it. :af

By US standards you could get to Whitesheet from South Wales which has got a road right to the top...

Isle Of Wight. Been going every year for the past 18 years, with the sole intention of sloping. Nowadays the only slope soaring I do.
I dunno...

We're pretty lucky to have all these slopes - South Downs, Isle of Wight, Cornwall, Wales - a pretty amazing selection really.

I met a group of expert German slope soarers who come over to the South Downs each summer, and they said the UK has ten times the number of slopes, ten times the lift, ten times fewer flyers on the slopes ... and friendlier flyers too.

In the US they have some great slopes but they have to drive six hours to get to them.  And the few slopes that are accessible to population centres, such as Torrey Pines in San Diego, have a million flyers and are regulated to within an inch of their life.

In South Africa there are some great hills but my South African friend tells me you'd be out of your mind to wander around them alone or with just two or three of you, the mugging/stabbing rate is too high.  So you can only really do it as organised groups.

Makes you appreciate what we take for granted here.

Slopehunter's site is pretty damn good!

Thanks for the link. Is there a similar one for South West and or South Central?

There is this one for around Bristol that Goeffers did, all kinds of info, very useful. Bristol has a fair few villages around to stay in too.
White Sheet, Westbury, Cotswolds and The Bwlch only about an hour away too.
