Midland Slopers!
« on: August 31, 2009, 12:08:53 PM »
Hey all

I thought I would start a Midland Slopers thread for various stuff that we might like to post from our slopes here...

I'll kick off with a little vid of Adam and myself flying at Rushup Edge in Derbyshire yesterday - wind was pretty light but the conditions were really enjoyable nonetheless...

I guess I would call myself a South Midland(ish) soarer, as I live near Stow-on-the-Wold!! What directions does Rushup cater for, and where exactly is it? I'm all for trying new slopes.

Just checked it out on Wikipedia and MultiMap. Apparently, it's 140miles/3 hours from where I live. So would have to be sure of the conditions before making the trek!

I've lost your mobile no mate - pm it over to me and I'll text you next time we're leading up to going. As for the conditions - well the recent 229mph DS record that was set there was in between horizontal raun showers, so don't let that put you off! You can shelter pretty well behind that wall if it gets a little wet.

Zim, you must pass the L&MMGA sites each time you get to Rushup, why not call in one weekend and see your Erwin again. Saturday I flew a Bird, 1/3rd scale Discus and 1/3rd scale ASW 15.......lovely. Sunday was a bit damp but managed to fly The Bird and 1/3rd scale Ventus 2ax in the comp at Edge Top but rain stopped play. Ant.

Hi mate

Glad to hear that you're enjoying it! I've just realised I still have that bloody carbon joiner! I am a member of LMMGA as it goes - pm me your number and I'll give you a bell next time I'm up that way.  :af

No records but a couple of PB's 1 for me @116 and one for Graham (Deckit) at over 130+
No rain.

We had some visitors in the form of Martin M and Simon Cocker bith with some PSS models, And they did some PSDS'ing.

Good Day had by all.

No Mike, it's called "Power Scale Dynamic Soaring". Simon first did this last week with an Aermacchi, did Martin do it with his Dago Red Mustang. Zim, carry the joiner with you, we are bound to meet up, if not give it to Simon as I fly with him regularly. Ant.

Westerly 6-7mph for the next 2 days - Pole Cott might just work for something floaty - if not, just take the pooch for a walk through the heather. Its a win / win situation.

There is also LMMGA in the peaks.
Joining this club will get you speaking to people and onto more sites.
Their main site is just north of leek being the mermaid will fly any thing with a w in it. Then there is edge top for southerlies and elkston for easterlies.
They also fly on the roches and bosley cloud nw and ne.
membership is only £8. LMMGA :: Model Flying in the Staffordshire Moorlands or Welcome to the LMMGA Home Page 2 diffract sites.

Burton dasset may be closer to you beiong in the gaydon area. A bit of a hump.
then there is borough hill just east of leicester again sw to nw.

hope this helps

So how many people out there fly regularly in the Midlands?
And Where? (Not specificity but generally).

I have always thought that a Midlands thread is a bit broad but yet there is not allot of chatting going on here, Is that because it is too broad, or because the people that fly here just don't chat on line.

If you go to Pole Cott on Long Mynd tomorrow you should be sure to see a few flyers (not me, my part-time job as usual has me working Saturdays  :( ) - Garway Hill should be flyable too.

Not much Dave! There's an F3F comp at the Mynd so that's out for sport flying, but perhaps Baslow - isn't that a Westerly? Or The Gate?
