Slopes Near Barnstaple?
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:36:09 PM »
Visiting my sister this weekend in Barnstaple, any good slopes nearby? Thinking of bringing the trusty old Moth 60  :)

Cheers,

Tom

I've spent several holidays in North Devon I'd suggest Woolacombe which is approx 11 miles away. It has a superb W/WNW ridge running for 2 miles parallel to the beach, Between the beach and the top of the ridge is a road called Marine Drive which runs parallel. Park there and head up to the top. Good landing and super soothe.

There is a SW site at Mortehoe. Head for the church, though parking at the church is discouraged.

SE/S high on the top above Saunton Sands beach. Access from behind the ridge.

On the B43343 out of Woolacombe, as you go up the steep hill you will see an electricity pylon at the end of a track. From memory that's NW/N

Your forecast is W or NW so if it's on the ridge above the sea well worth a visit.

Yeah, very light lift off Potters hill on the Saturday to begin with, but it picked up throughout the day, the paragliders were on the other slope higher up, but I stayed on the lower one out of their way above the main car park entrance. Managed to fly back down to the car  :)

Sunday tried Coddon hill, very nice grassy landing area but alas no wind, but got a few circuits in before retiring to the nearby pub for Sunday lunch  :af

Thanks again for the advice
