Slopes near to Barkston Heath?
« on: August 26, 2010, 19:10:00 PM »
Westerly for Sunday and I will have a free day from comps at the Nats, any slopes worth visiting in the area (I think it is mostly flat around there?)
Regards,

Nearest West facing slopes are in the Pennines..a few miles from Barkston.

Not true, there is a slope at Belvoir which we laughingly referred to as the Belvoir ridge, I hill soared it for five and a half hours in an elderly Weihe (18/08/1972) to gain my Siver 'C' endurance. Still have the Barograph trace. Wish I still had the Weihe. :af

There are plenty of slopes along the Lincoln Edge (we used to slope soar one at Waddington, well inside the Vulcans circuit) but the problem was always getting land owners permission.

I have thrown a glider off the Belton edge less than a mile and a half from Barkston Heath many times. There is a tower on the edge locally called Belmont Tower ( actually called Bellmount Tower) that looks directly at Belton House.

If the wind is right then it is a good local site.

This is the 'slope'. Don't get me wrong, it is no mountain but if you have a spare hour and the wind is right (it normally is as the prevailing wind is up the slope and then it goes on to Barkston Heath and we know how windy that gets!) then you can have some fun there. There is a car park at the bottom and it is National Trust and the rangers are really friendly if you are respectful to the land and sheep.

Please forgive my childlike scrawling on the map, it is late after all!

No - thats great Sheridan many thanks :)  So I take it it is a westerly slope, so should work for Sunday then.  How high is it?  Am I going to get a 2m mouldie off the deck or should I just take a DLG ?

To be honest I don't have any experience of mouldies so I am not sure.

I fly my Blaster 2 DLG and a Gentle Lady there with much success.

To be honest Al it probably is a little too close for 35mhz.

I never give it a second thought as I only fly 2.4ghz. It is amazing how quickly we take things like that for granted isn't it?!

Thanks for the location details Sheridan, I visited it on Sunday afternoon, wind speed was 35MPH on the hill but it was slightly off the slope to the right.

I managed one flight with the binary but it took a clatter in the trees, the 35mph and turbulance was too much for it.  I also had 2 flights with the Alex, which went well but again, with the wind being off it was more blow than lift, so decided to give up before I broke it LOL.

Loverly view down the tree lined avenue to the House.  :af

No problem,

I did think it might be too windy for a DLG, it is however a beautiful day for it today!  :banghead:

Yep - but it was all I had to test the waters with so to speak, so it went first.  :)
