Pevensey to Crawley for a daily commute? All the best mate!

I think either approach might be a little risky if contemplating travelling from Crawley to Colley Hill.  Problems would probably start a mile or two north of Crawley...  :''

I like to try produce local to slopes, so for mothers day I bought Ridgeview sparking wine, made at the foot of Ditchling Beacon.  Fantastic!  Better than champagne.  One of the best fizzes I have ever tasted.  Actually it has beaten champagne in international wine competitions, and the Queen served it for her jubilee.  Not cheap at 24, but if you want something special, Ridgeview Bloomsbury is the business.  You can get it from Waitrose or you can pop into the winery after a flying session.
I love Waitrose, just don't like getting up at 3am for the early shift!

So THIS is where you have all been hiding! Thought it had gone quiet on the other half of the thread.  ::)

Hope to get to Thurnham tomorrow about midday. Or is the wind direction likely to be too far round to the south?

Should be alright.  I was passing near Wrotham today, so I stopped by there for half an hour, and the flying was surprisingly decent.  Such a lot of spacious air above, and spacious slope in front, and spacious landing behind, it's got to be brilliant place to fly Simon's big ASG some time.

The forecast SSW will be fine, Jef.  However there could be a few incoming showers that may force a quick dash for the cow shed.  :co

Edit: Light showers on their way, but I'm going anyway.

Jef, Eric just phoned me from Thurnham (11am Sunday) to say that conditions are poor and he is going home.  Cloud at 100ft, dampness in the air, some slope lift but no thermal help ... not worth a trip to Thurnham today basically.

I'm back, to do some decorating as I promised my wife I would, but conditions are improving now with the wind strength still increasing but thankfully the dampness has gone.

Unfortunately Jef from Essex, brought the wrong set of wings for his Calypso so had nothing to fly.
It was only just after I launched my WildThing for Jef to give him some airtime that he told me that he's a Mode 1 flyer and I'm Mode 2 even though I started back in the days of reeds! He did well but he did nearly have my head off during his last downwind landing approach.  :o

Charlie, 'Incoming' Ray and Jef were heading to the slope as I drove away down the lane.
Charlie also offered Jef a go with his new slippery M-something wing, as he is also a member of the Mode 1 club. Looks like Jef's journey wasn't wasted after all.  :af

I'm off to wield the sandpaper and paintbrush. :'(

Thanks Eric and Charlie.

My downwind landing approach wasn't that close (good job you didn't have a bigger hat on).  ;)

It was really nice of you both to let me fly your models. Made me feel very welcome indeed. Hope I can repay you both some day.

My only excuse is that I passed 55 last weekend and am now officially a senile delinquent.

I am going to make some new wing bags this evening with the names of the models written on.

Embarrassed of Essex!

I got to Thurnham about 16:30, it was very windy and the lift was epic. I have a Ellipse now and got maidened and quickly landed, too windy for such a light model but it has great potential for the lighter days. Flew the mini blade, it was eating up the sky

Good to hear that Mr Jiberjaber has emerged from his annual hibernation - maybe we'll see him and Jo on the slope again one day.

BTW - I heard the WT whistle as it went past my head so it must have been close!  ;)  ;D

I'm jealous! Let us know how you got on.

Got onto the slope around 11'sh to find a stiff wind dead on the slope, conditions were sunny then a couple of light showers blew through but the windspeed gradually increased through the day (XC Weather were a bit out!). Lift was good and consistent but not epic, I guess it was being suppressed by the high winds. I was also hoping for a bit more thermal activity, there was some but it was blowing through very quickly. Perfect conditions for the Swift, so lots of aerobatics.

About 8 other flyers up there, all nice chaps, but I found it a bit disconcerting that folk didn't stand together whilst flying...everyone scattered along the edge of the slope, it's just easier to communicate when more communal.

M25 a nightmare on the way home!

I don't understand why some glider pilots will not stand together with other pilots, this would NOT be tolerated at most power clubs. It is hard enough speaking to someone nearby in a 30+ mph wind and impossible if they are 30+ yards away! If a severe accident occurred because of an inability to communicate between pilots them the hobby would be heavily censured.  It really is a safety matter!
