It was a bit dull here today Gary.
I had jobs to do indoors earlier, but I might pop up the slope this evening for a session with my big floater to do a 'pre-longest-day-session' test flight just before sunset.   ;)

Edit: Due south tomorrrow, so not so good at Thurnham, but Sunday is looking epic.
SSW - SW, 17mph - time to get the heavyweight beasts out and ballast the lighter models.
Hopefully, if there is a strong launcher available, then my 6 metre ASH 26 will be taking to the skies!  :xx

I will be there will bring along the Ventus and hopefully get its maiden flight.

Thanks for the heads up Ian.
We didn't manage to spot the BBMF from Thurnham, maybe they were giving you a private show at Sutton Valence!  ;)

Thanks to all for assistance in getting the Ventus in the air yesterday. After a sucessfull launch which Paul capturing the event on video, the glider flew away with no issues due to Pauls great launching technique (Too many Pauls). After a time flying i passed the control to Simon who gave it some in flight test manouvers testing including C of G and handling. Following Simons tests Eric took control and gave if a whirl around the sky very gracefully, After testing Air brakes and Crow setup Eric made a perfect landing  (As expected). All advice and setup comments noted and will be corrected before next flight. Was good to see it flying after a year of waiting. Thank you all.

Second flight couldnt happen due to shall i say a minor electrical fault. Say no more but this will be rectified.

Joe, it was a pleasure helping to suggest the tweaks required to get your Ventus flying in a scale manner. You did well with the maiden launch and once you apply the necessary surface throw adjustments then you shouldn't have any problems with the approach and landing.

Thanks to Simon giving me two excellent launches despite having a painful neck, I had a couple of great flights with the ASH 26 in the force 5 wind combined with plenty of thermal activity. These were perfect conditions for it, but it was difficult to get it down from altitude at times and then try and make a reasonable stab at approach and landings. They were only my third and fourth flights with it and am gradually getting acquainted with its flight characteristics, so I should do better next time.

Lots of south westerlies this week, so take the opportunity and get up to Thurnham!

PS - 30+ Dakotas will be passing over Maidstone at 14:37hrs today, 5th June, so get yourselves a good vantage point and cameras at the ready!

Challenging session at Thurnham today!
Paul, Joe plus one new guy and me on the slope in conditions where there was excellent lift  :), immediately followed by massive sink.  >:(
If you weren't quick at getting back to the slope top then it was a walk of shame that both Paul and I performed.
I managed to scrape back up one time but the on the second, a large area of sink saw me landing out my big floater on the edge of the cropped field in the long grass just clear of the fence! Pheww, that was a close one, nearly had some repairs to do!

It's a Tailored Pilots pilot by Wilson http://tailoredpilots.com/

Like the old adage, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it!!"  Seriously though, they are very expensive - a third scale one starts at £190 and somehow I managed to add options to bring it up to £260!
I do have an AH Designs pilot going spare for £50 if you fancy it - not quite in the same league of course!

Hi Guys,
Something that should be of interest to us all is the House of Commons, Science and technology Committee, Drone use in the UK. Select Committee Rooms, 11th June.
It is available to view on BBC iPlayer on the Parliament Channel. Allow yourself 1 hour 52 minutes.
98% on the conversation is about commercially available Drones. It is hard for me not to get angry as they  treat models and drone the same but as we know they are very different.

BBC forecast shows 7 mph at 6pm gradually dropping to 4 mph at sunset.
So make sure you have something that will stay up when we have the mass launch just before sunset, with the aim of being airborne as the sun sets.

I'll be bringing my 135 gram DLG and my 3.3 metre RES floater with Heron as backup.
I'll be arriving between 5 and 6pm.

See you there!  :af

It's silly but I like doing it!  ;D ;D ;D - Roll on the Winter solstice - any takers?

Challenge accepted Paul!
My DLG is only 950mm wingspan so I should be able to keep it within the cone of aromaful (?), rising air!
You know me Paul, I'm always up for any of the wacky things you suggest!  ;D ;D ;D

Final decision this evening?

Yes, I agree Paul.  :af

I've checked all of the forecast sites and tomorrow evening looks to be the only doable slot with a fair south westerly breeze.
It all starts to fall apart on Friday, with Saturday and Sunday being east and north east respectively.

Let's see what the others say, but my vote is for tomorrow evening - I'll start defrosting my burgers!  ;D ;D ;D

Let's go with tomorrow (Thursday) then.... as Eric says, it's not looking too great for Friday evening onwards. Sorry you
won't be able to join us Jef, let's make sure we have another summer evening session when you can make it.

I've got to work during the day, so won't be up the hill until about 6 so I'll leave the BBQ at home too, we'll save that for a session
when we've got more time on our hands...

Look forward to seeing those who can make it!

The installation on my (new to me) Ventus leaves a little to be desired!....

That's a lotta silicon!

Eight separate servo leads coming out of the wings needed tidying up with a D connector:-

Hopefully it'll be nice when I've finished, but there are some really odd things done on the installation (how about servo horn facing hinge on ailerons when in neutral position?!)

I guess the photos are just too high resolution Mick (I confess I find it a pain to customise the resolution to all the different websites requirements!)

It's not beautifully built like Eric's Mueller ASH26 but hopefully it'll still make a decent aerotow glider

Excellent session at Thurnham yesterday.
Si maidened his new acquisition, a fully moulded 6 metre Ventus, after waiting for Mark to prove that the conditions were OK which they weren't, resulting in an outlanding and a long walk and climb. Si's excellent first flight looked great, he even looped it, but didn't attempt a roll and it culminated in a spectacular, straight, high-speed landing - well done Si!  :af

On a not so positive note, there's another doom-laden drone documentary showing this evening entitled 'Britain's Next Air Disaster? Drones'.
Let's see what this guy has to say!
