Dear South East Flyers

As an occasional visitor to Thurnham where I have met a few of you and know you to be fine, honest and enthusiastic glider flyers might I beg you to consider offering some support at a very prestigious soaring event coming to Kent.

On June 23/24 BARCS are hosting the 2nd F5J Interglide electric soaring competition at Hamilton Airstrip near Ashford. We will have 60 competitors coming from France, Germany, Netherlands and UK including many local pilots. What we need are some willing volunteers to help with timekeeping. It's not an overly onerous task but with 12 pilots per slot, it would be a great help to have some non competitors around to spread the load.

There's no money involved, either way but we can offer a light lunch and and maybe a beer or two at the Saturday evening BBQ plus the chance to witness some of the top pilots in Europe battling it.

If you are interested, please contact me Graham James grjinflightatyahoo.com (replace @) to discuss. See www.interglide.co.uk for more info  :uk:

Just a note for those who are not aware that Peter Sainsbury of the Bromley Club died last week at the age of 87. He was responsible for organising the Bromley rounds of Kent Interclub events for over 30  years and many I'm sure will know him. No funeral details known other than it will be in Eltham. The photo shows him at the front with timers watching the Ron Finniss Trophy 2014. He'll be missed but not forgotten

Thanks for letting us know about Peter, Ian.
Yes, he was always a stalwart at the thermal events in Kent and Sussex.
Please post here when you find out when his funeral will be.
Many thanks, Eric

The funeral of Peter Sainsbury will take place at Falconwood Crematorium "Small Chapel" Crown Woods Way, London SE9 2AZ on Thursday 14th June at 1345. This will be followed by a wake at Oxleas Woods Café Crown Woods Lane, London SE18 3JA at 1530. Please advise me if you intend going to the wake?

And now we have lost Rod Potts (ex secretary of the Invicta Model Flyers). I suppose it is a function of this sport being mainly men of a certain age, but it's still quite shocking

That's really sad news Simon, do keep us informed of any further information.

It's true that what we do has an appeal to a slightly older generation, but after flying with young George at Bo Peep yesterday there is a modicum of hope that in 20 years time there will be at least 100 people slope soaring in the UK...

That's really sad news Simon, I have known Rod since the early 1980's when I raced and trained with his son in SFACC (cycling club).

Excellent afternoons flying at Thurnham yesterday. Lightish WSW winds bringing excellent thermals and occasional areas of sink enjoyed by just Joe and me and half a dozen paragliders.

The afternoon was married only by an out of control dog that ripped up the expensive decorating sponge that I use to protect my radio when it's in my flight box. I was flying at the time and the dog's owners just laughed, dumped the pile of foam pieces alongside my chair and walked off. They weren't laughing when after I had landed I caught up with them and insisted that they pay for a replacement. If they had have apologised at the time I wouldn't have bothered but the fact that they hadn't annoyed me - it's the principle that counts. As usual the excuse was that 'my dog is always under control and doesn't normally do things like that'.

I expect that you've all heard that RCMF is shutting down at the end of the month.

So as an interim measure I have setup a 'South East Flyers Part 3' thread on the forum of www.flyingsites.co.uk where you'll find that a number of regular RCMF contributers are already established.

See you there?

Sad
It was in the recent posts area at the bottom of the Home Page headed "and it's goodbye from him . . ." posted by Wiz.
You'll find about 100 posts there about it.

However, . . . . . Wiz has been been contacted by a benefactor who very kindly has donated sufficient funds to keep the site going for a couple of years and others are suggesting setting up an area where monies can be deposited, in a scheme much like that operating on Scale Soaring UK.

So the RCMF Forum has been saved! :D

People are only just realising what an excellent assett the RCMF forum is to us all - Long may it continue!  :uk:

I'll be there Ian.

I see a number of faces in the Vlissingen picture, you (just), Sam Laurence (now departed), similarly Ron Gardner, Gus Hannegraph, Frank van Kestren (also not with us), Rob Cavell, Peter Keim and Edviin Vebb (as the Dutch would say) to name a few!

I'm also there, that slim fella, second from the left , but once again no one will believe that it's me!  :'(

Edit: Compare that with the picture of me with Simon at Buckminster in the RCM&E article by Simon Cocker. Oh dear, look what the years and all that good food has done to my body!

To see Mr Cocker's excellent article on the first aerotow event at the BMFA National Centre, either buy the magazine (I'll have to for posterity) or you can get a free viewing of it on the Scale Soaring UK website.

By the way Ian, how's your scalie coming along?

All the best, Eric

Flying today at Warden Springs near Minster with Charlie, Graham, Andy and Eric P, some of them out with their Lidl gliders, Light winds and patchy lift to start with getting slightly better during the afternoon.

An excellent afternoon's flying at Thunham yesterday despite the appearance of 6 or 7 paragliders. Light lift to start with but within an hour there was sufficient wind strength to enable a new flyer at the slope to successfully maiden his 3 metre Gerasis Discus. Christophe is an experienced slope flyer who will be returning regularly and is keen to join Invicta Model Flyers. Welcome to Thurnham Christophe and thanks to Gary at Slopehunter for providing directions to the site.  :af

I'm starting to watch the weather in anticipation of our longest day session.

At the moment Wednesday is warm and south westerly, whilst Thursday (the actual longest day)
is a tad cooler with northerlies / east north-easterlies.

We're still a few days off so it could all change but, if the forecast proves accurate, how would
everyone feel about flying til sundown on the Wednesday rather than Thursday?

Well spotted Paul, I'll be there. :uk:
Will be arriving at about 6pm.

This afternoon conditions were warm with a strong south westerly.
The 'arrestor grass' as Paul calls it,  has now been cut and was being turned over by the farmer and so it soon should all be safely gathered in - let's hope he doesn't do it on Wednesday evening.
A very pleasant visitor from Duetschland arrived and flew an Alula very capably. Normally he flies mouldies but as he is travelling he only has the Alula and a Multiplex Merlin (and wife) with him. He is quite happy to be known as 'Herman the German' and he should be joining us on Wednesday evening, so please make him welcome if you see him.   :)

Hope you got a good flying session in at Thurnham last night.

I won't be able to make it to a summer solstice session tonight - with the north wind I wouldn't be able to make it anywhere in time. For those living near the South Downs it should be a great evening for a fly.
