HobbyKing Orders

I'm just about to place an order with HobbyKing and I don't need many more items to get FREE delivery.
So if anyone local to Thurnham wants anything from HK without a delivery charge, let me know and I'll add the items to my order.

I've just spotted that the small folding seats that we use on the slope are now down to £7.85 - Bargain!!

Eric please buy 2 for me. I'll arrange to collect from Thurnham but will pay you now or whenever if you email/pm me your account details.

PS I'm hoping my best spotter/timer for International Competitions will be available for some if not all of 22nd to 23rd June at Hamilton Farm Ashford

Very sorry Ian, but I put the order in just 30 minutes before you posted your request to me. However the price is still £7.85, so even with p&p, it's still cheaper than the previous full price and if you convince Rob to have one that would help as well.

Yes, if I'm free and fit I'll come along and spot/time for you next June. I'll do my best spotting for you and again I'll leave it to you whether or not you take my 'expert' advice!  ;D ;D ;D

Yesterday - Good/bad/good/bad/goodies/bad/goodish:banghead:

The Good - I looked at the forecast yesterday morning and also out of the window and thought "It's going to be a great flying day today!" and posted a note on here. So while I did a couple of jobs for SWSBO, I charged up my venerable oldies, the Phase 6 and Mark 1 Algebra.

The Bad - On arriving at the slope I went to put the Phase 6 together and found that I still had the remains of a broken nylon wing bolt, kindly donated to me by Eric P, stuck in the fuselage and it just wouldn't budge and I had also forgotten to bring along some spare bolts! So on to Plan B - I assembled the Algebra and found that the starboard aileron servo had failed, well it is a 30 year old Fleet servo! In disgust I hurriedly put the wings back in the 'overhead storage facility'(OSF), i.e. two pieces of rope strung between the grab handles, picked up my field bag with just lunch, coffee and folding chair in it and headed over to where the assembled throng of slopers were.

The Good - On arriving at the 'pits' area, I greeted everyone, set up my chair, poured out a coffee and proceeded to get updated with all the latest gossip and views on world events. Bob regailed us with happenings on the Caribbean adventure that he has recently returned from, women fighting getting thrown off the ship, lechery resulting in bridal parties getting thrown off the ship and a dead body getting thrown off the ship moored opposite. Will Bob go on a cruise again, I think he's a bit undecided! Anyway a good catch up and natter, but not that much flying, was the order of the day which ended when the temperature started to drop around 3pm.

The Bad - After driving back from the slope I pulled up outside my house, opened the rear tailgate, there was a great cracking sound and I was greeted with the sight of one of my Algebra wings bent at 45 degrees from halfway along its length. It appeared that in my haste to stow the wings in the OSF, I hadn't put them in the wing bags which had allowed the wings to slide back towards the tailgate when I did a racing start in my MPV. One wingtip somehow got caught on a lip on the tailgate with the inevitable result when I opened it. However an injection of glue and the installation of a couple of ply vertical webs should make it nearly as good as old! Old gliders don't die, they just get repaired lots of times.

The Goodies - When I got back into my study/junk/modelling room I spent the next hour or so ordering chairs and other sundry items for the Thurnham Massive from that model shop in the Cloud called HobbyKing - not sure how long it will take to get our bits and pieces as an order that I placed last weekend is still shown as 'processing'.

A late Bad addition - Unfortunately Ian, aka Nicholls on the forum, missed my HobbyKing FREE DELIVERY offer as his request to me to order a couple of chairs for him came in 30 minutes after I had sent the order - sorry Ian!

Goodish - Tomorrow looks flyable in the afternoon, but SWSBO has some more jobs lined up for me, but I will keep a model ready to go just in case a window of opportunity occurs.  :xx

Eric

PS - I hope this has kept you entertained for a while on this wet afternoon.

An aileron on a Mark 1 Algebra? Surely you must have added those. I have a set of the swept back wings sans ailerons ply box fuselage tailplane and rudder following an incident some 35 years ago!

Having flown Eric's modified Algebra Ian I can confirm that the ailerons (added) have almost no effect to its rolling capability!

Ian, This is the Algebra that I bought from Simon Ward about 20 years ago complete with Fleet servos and many repairs to the wing. Looking closely it seems that the wing is actually the 3 metre version cut down.

Like our Si, Simon Ward is very good with epoxy and glass cloth, (that was his job when he moved to the Netherlands at about the same time), and as the bottom of the wing is intact, all I need to do is bend the wing at the break, squirt some glue in, clamp it flat for a couple of days and then add a couple of vertical webs across the break. Thinks, I bought an Ozito Multi-Tool last weekend to do some jobs around the house and 15,000 rpm oscillating saw blade will be just the tool to use to cut the slots. While I'm about it I think I'll double the size of the ailerons, change the servos and then give it to Simon to test its rolling capabilities. I tried to roll it a couple of times and gave up, it flies so much better just using rudder. In fact it's a handy trainer for me to simulate flying my 7 metre ASH 25 as that is never going to roll and it needs to be controlled using rudder as the primary turn control on the left stick, al la Mode 4.

Ian,
I have a Mark One Algrebra ply box fuselage up in my 'model store in the sky'.
From what I can recall, it's three quarters built and it just needs the top and bottom ply pieces glueing on.
It's yours if you want it . . . and if I can find it!  ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
Eric

Happy Christmas everyone!

As we have just passed the shortest day, I realise the last time I flew was the other end of the solstice spectrum.

Is anyone planning on flying on New Year's Day?

Gave myself a little Christmas present...
I know modern glass gliders tend to all look the same, but this is a bit of historic Aristocracy - a 1/3rd scale ASH26 made by Schueler.  About 20 years old but superb quality, fully moulded.  She's yellowed a bit but I call that patina! (I may re-spray her one day).  Came with an excellent Axel pilot.

Each wing is nearly 3m long and amazingly they fit in my little BMW i3 (which I'll be calling the Tardis from now on!)

Hi all.

I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and is loving the turkey sandwiches 😀

I am looking to make what is seeming to be my annual pilgrimage to Thurnham at some point soon.  Time to dust off the Wildy and see if the batteries & electronics still work!  Looking at the forecast, possibly this Saturday maybe???

Cheers,
Lee

I hope it's okay to post this here but I have a few gliders that don't get flown as much as they should so I have decided to sell them onto someone that hopefully will.

Wildthing 50". Probably could do with a re-tape but flies fine as it is. SOLD;

Alula with fabulous bird design. 2s lipo and regulator. SOLD;

Hobby King Mini Swift with two 2s lipos, new spare fus and new wings. SOLD;

Multiplex Easy Glider Pro and power set with new spare wings, two main spars (one with ballast rod),  two 3s lipos and I believe all the parts to convert it back to a pure glider if so desired. £75;

And finally, Tragi 704V 3m mouldie with ballast/wooden spacers and a spare V tail. 2s lipo and regulator.  SOLD.

All come with Futaba or Futaba compatible receivers.

If anyone is interested, I'll bring them with me to Thurnham tomorrow.

[edited to show what sold 30/12/18]

I picked up a carbon fibre receiver for my siren last week but haven't had the chance to drill the fuzz for the ant ..that's all that's keeping her on the ground

I am in the process of patching up my zagi scars from the last outing ..

On another note I picked up a couple new models yesterday .. new eflite pitts special and dh dragon rapide

Twenty in the air at one time!  Unfortunately a viscous attack from Pete broke off one of my linkages (never found it!) so that curtailed my foam bashing fun but it was a great day anyway - and and two new members for Invicta Model Flyers!
